Spend a few hours on the water learning how a powerboat responds to steering, throttle, and tidal conditions in the Solent. This session is ideal for anyone curious about boating, planning to charter, or simply wanting a practical introduction to handling a powerboat.
The session begins with a short onshore briefing covering safety procedures, basic vessel operation, and familiarisation with equipment. Participants are introduced to practical handling techniques before heading onto open water.
Once afloat, everyone gets the opportunity to operate the helm under the instructor’s guidance, practising basic manoeuvres, throttle control, and steering. The instructor gives personalised tips to help participants feel comfortable and confident on the water.
During the remainder of the session, the group navigates stretches of the Solent, experiencing how tides, wind, and other vessels affect handling. The pace is tailored to the participants, allowing everyone to get involved and enjoy the session at their own comfort level.
The experience is based in the Solent, one of the UK’s busiest and most varied boating areas. This tidal strait separates the Isle of Wight from mainland Hampshire and offers a combination of sheltered waters, open channels, and bustling harbours, making it ideal for practising boat handling in a realistic environment.
Departures are from Hamble Point Marina, a well-equipped facility providing easy access to the Solent and local navigation routes. The marina itself has secure berths, ample parking, and nearby facilities, giving participants a comfortable base before and after the session. Depending on experience and goals, alternative local waterways such as the Beaulieu or Lymington Rivers can be arranged, offering a range of tidal conditions and berthing challenges.
No prior boating experience is required. This session is suitable for beginners and those looking to gain confidence in handling a powerboat in different conditions.
Participants should be comfortable wearing practical clothing suitable for water-based activities, including waterproof layers, non-marking shoes, and sun protection. Basic mobility and comfort at the helm are recommended.
Each session is led by an experienced instructor who tailors guidance to skill levels, creating a supportive, practical learning environment. Hands-on time on the water is prioritised, allowing everyone to gain confidence through real-world practice.
Local knowledge of the Solent is shared throughout, including how tides, wind, and traffic affect manoeuvring and decision-making. The session combines safe, structured learning with an enjoyable on-water experience, giving a well-rounded introduction to powerboating.
Up to six individuals can be included in a single booking, giving everyone the chance to spend time at the helm and practise manoeuvres.
Smaller groups allow the instructor to focus on each person, offering tailored guidance and ensuring that everyone can develop confidence in steering, throttle control, and close-quarters handling.
The session runs for approximately three hours, including a briefing, hands-on practice, and a scenic cruise.
This timeframe balances learning, enjoyment, and exposure to different tidal and traffic conditions, allowing each person to gain meaningful experience on the water.
Yes, everyone attending has the opportunity to helm the vessel under close supervision.
The instructor adjusts coaching to match experience and confidence levels, so beginners can focus on basic handling while those more familiar with boating can practise precision manoeuvres and navigation.
No experience is required. The session is suitable for total beginners and those who want to refresh their skills.
The activities are structured so that each person can progress at their own pace, gaining confidence and control over the vessel without pressure.
The boat, fuel, lifejackets, and all necessary safety equipment are provided.
This ensures that everyone can focus on learning and enjoying the experience safely, without having to worry about bringing additional gear.
Sessions depart from Hamble Point Marina in Southampton.
Final boarding times and any additional instructions are confirmed at booking. Alternative launch points can be arranged depending on the participant group’s location and objectives.
Comfortable, practical clothing is recommended, including waterproof layers, non-marking shoes, sunglasses, and sun protection.
Soft bags are preferable for personal items, and any necessary medication should be brought along. The focus is on comfort and safety while on the water.
Under-18s are welcome with a parent or guardian, subject to the instructor’s discretion.
Activities are adapted to suit younger attendees, giving them the opportunity to participate safely while learning essential boat-handling skills.
