Dornod is Mongolia's eastern frontier aimag, with Choibalsan as its capital and long graded roads crossing grassland that can feel endless. The Mongol Daguur steppe and other protected areas hold grassland birds and herds of gazelle when conditions are right. Logistics are thinner than in the west, so this suits small groups with time.
Choibalsan has a Soviet-era grid layout and a handful of hotels used by business travellers and expedition crews. Expect simpler meals than in tourist ger camps elsewhere, but reliable fuel stations for onward drives.
Grassland rolls to the horizon with telegraph poles the only vertical lines for miles. Choibalsan airport sees occasional charter flights when eastern routes open for the summer season.
White-naped cranes and other grassland birds breed in protected steppe when rainfall is good. Convoys carry extra water because wells are far apart on cross-eastern routes.
Choibalsan hotels book out when domestic business travellers pass through on government schedules. Book rooms early if your dates overlap a conference week.
