Darkhan is Mongolia's second-largest city, built as a Soviet industrial centre and still focused on mining and manufacturing. Adventure travellers usually pause for fuel, lunch and a hotel night when breaking the drive to Khövsgöl or Amarbayasgalant, rather than planning activities here.
Paved sections on the UB to Darkhan road make faster progress than on western tracks. Hotels are functional rather than charming, which is fine when you only need sleep and a hot shower before the next long leg.
The city grew around a Soviet-era steel plant, and apartment blocks give way quickly to open steppe on the road north. Cafes along the main avenue serve hearty soups that suit long driving days.
Guesthouses near the highway cater to convoys heading to Khövsgöl, with early breakfasts for drivers who want to beat traffic leaving Ulaanbaatar. ATMs work most days, though plan cash before remote legs.
Evening traffic thins quickly, and hotels fill on summer weekends when lake convoys pass through.
