📸 What to Expect

After meeting at Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon, you’ll board a 4×4 vehicle for a scenic ride to Falljökull Glacier. The drive includes rugged F-Roads and glacier plains, with commentary from your guide on regional geology and history. Upon arrival, you’ll receive all climbing gear including crampons, ice axes, helmets, harnesses, and boots if needed. A short hike across mostly flat, rocky terrain brings you to the glacier’s edge, where a safety briefing and gear demonstration prepares you for the ice.

Climbing begins with an introduction to front pointing and ice axe use on a gentle wall. Once comfortable, you’ll progress to more challenging ice walls, selected to match your ability and confidence. The guide takes professional photographs throughout the session, including action shots, group portraits, and scenic landscapes. After completing the climbs, you hike back to the glacier parking lot and return to the hotel, leaving with a downloadable package of five edited images.

📍 Location

Falljökull Glacier sits within Skaftafell, part of Vatnajökull National Park. Its ever-changing ice walls, moulins, and crevasses offer a unique environment for climbing and photography. The area provides easy access for hikers of moderate fitness while presenting striking blue ice formations rarely seen outside Iceland.

The glacier lies roughly 4.5 hours from Reykjavík, making overnight accommodation nearby recommended for timely arrival. The surrounding region includes scenic glacier plains and geological features unique to the South Coast, adding context and beauty to the adventure.

📋 Prerequisites

No prior ice climbing experience is required. Participants should have a moderate level of fitness, be able to walk on uneven terrain, and follow safety instructions provided by the guide. Warm, waterproof clothing and boots with ankle support are essential for comfort and safety, especially given the glacier’s exposure and low temperatures.

Safety briefings and guided instruction ensure all participants understand techniques and equipment use. Climbs are scaled to individual abilities, allowing each participant to progress at a comfortable pace while still enjoying the full glacier experience.

FAQ :

Is this suitable for complete beginners?

The session is fully designed for participants with no prior ice climbing experience. Guides provide step-by-step instruction on walking on ice and basic climbing techniques such as front pointing. Initial climbs are gentle, allowing participants to gain confidence before progressing to more challenging vertical or overhanging walls. Safety is emphasised at every stage, and all participants are secured to ropes and guided individually.

Climbers gradually advance according to their comfort and skill level. The session encourages learning at your own pace, with the guide observing and adjusting climbs to ensure a safe, enjoyable, and rewarding experience. By the end of the tour, most beginners feel capable navigating ice walls while gaining new technical skills.

How is the private session structured?

Private sessions are tailored exclusively to your group, allowing for personalised instruction and a flexible schedule. The guide demonstrates techniques, supervises each climb, and provides real-time feedback. You can take breaks as needed, ask questions, and focus on practising skills without the pressure of larger groups.

In addition to climbing, the private format allows extended time for professional photography and exploration of the glacier. Guides capture action shots, group portraits, and landscapes, ensuring that each participant has high-quality images while still enjoying a paced, safe adventure on the ice.

How physically demanding is ice climbing?

Ice climbing combines strength, balance, and endurance, but it is accessible to most with moderate fitness. Guides teach proper footwork and efficient use of equipment to minimise fatigue. Climbs are scaled to individual ability, with easier walls used for warming up and more technical walls introduced progressively.

Participants spend time hiking on rocky or icy terrain, requiring basic stamina. Regular breaks and guidance help manage exertion, making the session suitable for a wide range of ages and fitness levels.

What equipment is provided?

Participants receive crampons, ice axes, helmets, harnesses, and hiking boots if requested. All ropes, anchors, and safety systems are set up by the guide, ensuring a secure environment. Guides demonstrate proper use of each piece of equipment and monitor participants throughout the climb.

The session also includes photography equipment handled by the guide, who captures images while participants focus on climbing. Guests are encouraged to bring cameras or smartphones for personal photos if desired.

Will I be able to tackle different ice walls?

Yes. Climbers start with smaller, easier walls to build confidence and technique. As comfort and skill improve, the guide introduces more vertical, overhanging, or complex walls. Each climb is chosen according to the participant’s ability and comfort, ensuring a rewarding yet safe challenge.

If a participant struggles with a climb, the guide can safely lower or raise them. The session balances adventure with safety, allowing participants to enjoy multiple ice formations without unnecessary risk.

What if someone feels nervous about heights?

Guides provide constant supervision and use safety ropes for all climbs. Smaller walls are used initially to familiarise participants with equipment and movement. Gradual progression and reassurance help reduce fear while building confidence on the ice.

Individual support ensures participants can attempt climbs at their own pace. The guide remains attentive to comfort levels, adjusting routes and providing encouragement to make the experience enjoyable and secure.
