A day on the water here brings you face to face with some of the most well-known snorkelling spots around the Gili Islands, from underwater statues to coral reefs and turtle hangouts. Whether joining a shared boat or booking privately, the experience is set up to make it easy to get in the water and enjoy what’s below the surface without any hassle.
Start of the day begins at the meeting point on Gili Trawangan, where snorkelling gear is sorted and the boat is ready to go. Once on board the glass-bottom boat, the journey between spots already gives a glimpse into the water below, setting the tone before even getting wet.
Three main snorkelling stops shape the route, each offering something slightly different. One area is known for its underwater statues where you can swim around the sculptures and take photos in clear water. Another stop focuses on turtle sightings, where there’s a good chance of seeing them moving through the sea grass and open water. A third location brings a mix of coral reefs and fish life, with plenty to see just a few metres below the surface.
Between stops, there’s time to relax on the boat, chat with the guide, and review GoPro footage if you’re on a shared trip. Private bookings follow a similar route but with more flexibility, allowing the pace and timing to be adjusted so the experience feels more personal and unhurried.
Surrounding waters of the Gili Islands are where the experience takes place, an area known for calm sea conditions and easy snorkelling access. The islands sit between Lombok and Bali, with Gili Trawangan acting as the main departure point.
Clear visibility and shallow reef systems make this part of Indonesia particularly popular for marine life spotting. Turtle sightings are common, and the underwater landscapes vary between sandy areas, coral gardens, and art installations beneath the surface.
Comfort in the water makes the experience more enjoyable, though no prior snorkelling experience is needed. A guide is on hand throughout to support entry into the water and point out areas of interest during each stop.
Young swimmers from age 7 upwards are welcome as long as they feel confident in open water. Life jackets are available if preferred, and the pace is adjusted depending on the group or private setup.
Local guides bring strong knowledge of the Gili Islands’ waters, helping to time visits to snorkelling spots for the best possible conditions. Turtle areas, reef sections, and statue sites are all part of a well-planned route designed around what’s usually active beneath the surface.
Equipment is well maintained and safety is taken seriously throughout the trip, with support available from start to finish. Choosing between shared and private options also means the experience can be shaped to suit different travel styles, whether that’s a more social outing or a quieter time on the water.
No prior experience is needed, as the activity is designed for beginners through to confident swimmers. A guide is present throughout to help with getting comfortable in the water and to point out marine life during each stop.
Even if it’s your first time snorkelling, support is available from the boat team when entering and exiting the water. Life jackets can also be used if preferred, making it more accessible for those less confident.
The experience begins at Sama Sama Reggae Bar on Gili Trawangan, which is an easy-to-find central meeting point. From there, everything is organised before heading out on the boat.
Once the group is ready, the boat departs directly to the first snorkelling location. Returning is also to Gili Trawangan, making it simple to plan the rest of your day afterwards.
Turtles are commonly seen at one of the main snorkelling spots, often feeding in shallow areas or swimming past reefs. Coral formations and colourful fish are also found across all three locations.
The underwater statues add something different, with marine life often gathering around the structures. Visibility conditions can vary, but the route is chosen to give the best chance of seeing a range of sea life.
Yes, GoPro recording is included as part of the experience, either shared on group trips or dedicated on private bookings. Footage is usually captured during key moments at each snorkelling stop.
After the trip, the clips are typically shared so you can keep the memories without needing your own camera. This also allows you to focus fully on the water during the experience.
A swimsuit, towel, and sun protection are the main essentials for the day. It’s also a good idea to bring a dry bag for any personal items you want to keep safe.
Most equipment is provided, so there’s no need to bring snorkelling gear. Some guests also like to bring a waterproof phone pouch for extra photos on the boat.
Yes, the snorkelling spots are generally in calm, shallow areas with manageable conditions. This makes it suitable for those new to snorkelling as well as more experienced swimmers.
Guides are always nearby in the water and on the boat, helping to make sure everyone feels comfortable throughout the experience. Life jackets are also available if needed.
Time is split between the three main locations, with flexibility depending on conditions and group pace. Each stop allows enough time to explore the area and enjoy the surroundings.
Private bookings can adjust timing slightly to suit preference, while group trips follow a set route. Breaks between stops are taken on the boat.
Yes, children from age 7 and above are welcome as long as they are comfortable in the water. The experience is structured to be manageable for younger swimmers with supervision.
Life jackets are available and guides assist where needed, especially during entry and exit from the water. Parents or guardians are encouraged to stay close during snorkelling.
