Follow coastal mountain paths and scenic gravel tracks on an electric mountain bike experience through the hills surrounding Donostia - San Sebastián. Combining relaxed riding, sea views, and sections of the Camino de Santiago, this guided tour offers an active way to explore the Basque coastline without demanding technical riding experience.
Starting close to La Concha beach, the guide will prepare the electric mountain bikes and provide a short introduction before the ride begins. The route first crosses parts of the city using bike-friendly streets and cycle paths before reaching the lower slopes of Igueldo Mountain, where the terrain gradually changes into gravel tracks and countryside trails.
Using the assistance of the electric bikes, riders can comfortably climb towards the Kukuarri Cross while enjoying wide coastal views and quieter natural surroundings away from the city centre. Part of the route follows sections of the Camino de Santiago, adding a more traditional and historic atmosphere to the experience. Along the way, riders pass scenic viewpoints overlooking the coastline and the distinctive “Ratón de Guetaria” rock formation visible further along the shore.
Rather than focusing on technical mountain biking, the experience is designed around enjoyable riding, accessible trails, and taking time to appreciate the scenery. The return journey follows quieter secondary roads back towards San Sebastián, creating a relaxed finish to the ride. This makes the tour especially well suited to families, groups of friends, and visitors wanting an easier off-road cycling experience.
Coastal hills surrounding Donostia - San Sebastián provide excellent terrain for electric mountain biking thanks to their mixture of gravel tracks, panoramic viewpoints, and quieter countryside routes. Igueldo Mountain is one of the best-known riding areas close to the city and offers direct access to elevated coastal scenery only a short distance from the beachfront.
Sections of the route also connect with parts of the Camino de Santiago, one of Europe’s most famous pilgrimage trails. Combined with sea views and peaceful riding paths, the area offers a very different side of San Sebastián compared to the busy promenade and city centre streets.
No advanced mountain biking experience is required for this activity, although participants should feel comfortable riding a bicycle for several hours across mixed terrain including gravel paths and moderate climbs.
Comfortable sporting clothes and suitable footwear are recommended for the ride. Bringing a water bottle is also advised, particularly during warmer weather conditions.
Knowledge of the surrounding trails and coastal routes allows the guides to create rides that balance scenery, enjoyable terrain, and manageable effort levels. Electric mountain bikes make it possible for a wider range of riders to experience the mountain areas around San Sebastián without the physical demands of traditional mountain biking.
Smaller groups help maintain a more relaxed pace throughout the tour and allow guides to adapt the experience depending on the confidence level of the riders. The combination of quality e-bikes, local insight, and carefully selected routes creates an experience suitable for both recreational cyclists and visitors looking for a more active sightseeing experience.
Group sizes are kept between 1 and 8 people to ensure a more personal experience and allow guides to adapt the ride to the group’s pace and ability level. Smaller groups also make it easier to move through both city routes and countryside trails comfortably.
If your group has more than 8 people, please use the “Can’t find a date or have a large group?” button above the booking form to send an enquiry. Larger private groups can often be arranged depending on guide availability and the type of ride you are looking for.
No advanced mountain biking experience is needed for this tour, as the route focuses on accessible gravel tracks and scenic trails rather than technical riding.
Participants should still feel comfortable cycling for several hours on mixed terrain including gentle climbs and uneven surfaces.
The electric mountain bikes provide pedal assistance while riding, helping make climbs and longer distances easier and more comfortable.
Riders still pedal normally, but the motor reduces the overall effort required throughout the route.
This experience is designed to be relatively accessible and enjoyable rather than highly demanding or technical.
The electric assistance and carefully chosen trails make the ride suitable for a wide range of fitness levels.
Yes, part of the route follows sections of the Camino de Santiago trail network near the coastline.
This adds a more historic and cultural element to the experience alongside the scenic riding.
The route includes coastal viewpoints, countryside trails, forested sections, and views towards the “Ratón de Guetaria” rock formation along the coastline.
Several sections overlook the Bay of Biscay and the surrounding Basque hillsides.
Comfortable sporting clothes and suitable trainers or flat shoes are recommended for the ride.
Layered clothing can also be useful depending on weather conditions near the coast and in the mountain areas.
