Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary brings together marked rainforest trails, a gentle river float, and a swim at Ben's Bluff waterfall in one guided day from the coast. Collection covers Placencia, Maya Beach, Seine Bight, and Hopkins, with a Belizean lunch back at the visitor centre before the return drive.
After roughly an hour on the road into the Maya Mountain foothills, the visitor centre is where your guide introduces the reserve and outlines the plan for the day. Marked paths lead toward the river, where a short safety briefing precedes a float on gentle current through shaded forest.
Leaving the water, the group continues on foot to Ben's Bluff waterfall for a swim or a rest on the rocks before retracing the trail to the centre. A Belizean lunch there gives everyone time to dry off and eat before the same vehicle returns you to the peninsula or Hopkins.
The sanctuary sits in the foothills of the Maya Mountains, about an hour from the Placencia Peninsula along paved roads that give way to a winding dirt stretch into the rainforest. The visitor centre anchors the day as the base for briefing, lunch, and the start of the trails.
Known as the world's first jaguar preserve, Cockscomb keeps you well away from the beach in thick forest rather than open coast. Pickup is offered from four coastal communities, so the drive in and out is part of how the day is structured rather than a separate arrangement.
Children from 7 years old can join when they can walk marked jungle paths in closed-toe shoes and manage a gentle river float. Hill-walking experience is not required, though humid, sometimes muddy ground is part of a rainforest day.
Bring a towel and clothes you can get wet, because tubing and the waterfall swim are built into the route rather than optional extras. Mention at the visitor centre if anyone in the group needs a slower pace so the guide can keep the trail comfortable for everyone.
Hiking, tubing, and a waterfall swim are woven into a single seven-hour outing with lunch included, so you do not need to stitch together separate stops yourself. Groups of 2 to 12 keep the trails and the river from feeling crowded.
Licensed guides talk through plants, wildlife, and the reserve as you walk, and the jaguar preserve setting gives the day a sense of place that a single short trail cannot match. Hotel pickup from four communities makes the logistics straightforward from the coast.
Drivers collect you from your hotel or guesthouse in Placencia, Maya Beach, Seine Bight, or Hopkins and head inland toward the Maya Mountain foothills. The transfer is about an hour, first on paved roads and then on a winding dirt stretch into the reserve. This is a good time to rest before the walk and the river.
On arrival you meet your guide at the visitor centre for a short introduction to the reserve, its plants, and the plan for the day. Closed-toe shoes stay on, and you sort what you need for the trail versus what can wait in the vehicle. From here the group sets off on marked paths toward the river.
A short hike brings you to the river, where the guide runs a safety briefing before you step into a tube. You float on gentle current through rainforest, then leave the water and continue on foot. The tubing section is a pause in the day, not a separate ticketed ride.
After the river, the group walks on to Ben's Bluff waterfall. You can swim in the pool, stand under the fall, or sit on the rocks while others take a dip. This is the main swim stop of the day, then you retrace the trail toward the visitor centre.
Back at the visitor centre, a Belizean lunch is served so you can dry off and eat before the return. The same vehicle takes you back to your hotel or guesthouse on the peninsula or in Hopkins. The full day from pickup to drop-off is about 7 hours.
We'll collect you from your hotel or guesthouse in Placencia, Maya Beach, Seine Bight, or Hopkins. Share your property name when you reserve.
Wear closed-toe shoes and arrive ready for a full day inland. We'll return you to the same pickup point after the hike, tubing, and waterfall stop.
