Glide on handcrafted bamboo rafts through east-coast rainforest on the Rio Grande or choose the closer Rio Nuevo float from Ocho Rios. Two linked products cover Portland's classic journey or a shorter Saint Mary section.
Rio Grande departures include a scenic drive through Saint Mary and Portland before you meet your captain for a slow pole through jungle-lined water lasting around ninety minutes each way on wide bamboo rafts. You sit on a handcrafted bamboo deck while the captain poles, so the focus stays on rainforest canopy and river bends rather than paddling yourself.
Rio Nuevo is nearer Ocho Rios for a shorter rafting session with the same unhurried pace, ideal when you want lush scenery without the longest road day. The float still feels like a classic bamboo journey, just with less time on the coastal highway before you reach the put-in.
Rio Grande rafting runs near Port Antonio in Portland parish, while Rio Nuevo sits between Ocho Rios and Saint Mary on the north coast. Both rivers use handcrafted bamboo rafts poled by captains, but Portland adds a longer road day for a classic east-coast rainforest float.
Pickup starts from Ocho Rios hotels and cruise guests, with travel time varying by which river you select on the linked product. Your driver confirms the morning window when you share your hotel or pier name so the road leg matches the raft departure.
No rafting experience is required because captains pole the rafts while you sit and enjoy the view. Basic comfort sitting on a bamboo platform for an extended period helps on Rio Grande days.
Bring sun protection and a dry bag because splashes and tropical sun are common on open water sections between overhanging trees. Seated rafting still gets your feet wet on the bamboo deck, so pack a towel for the return transfer to Ocho Rios.
Our outfit grew from locally founded north-coast tour work, with drivers trained to Jamaica Tourist Board standards for safe, personable road days. You keep one familiar contact from lobby or pier pickup through the last waterfall or river stop.
The same guide-and-driver team runs these Saint Ann and Trelawny loops regularly, so they know when cruise mornings crowd the coast and which inland trailheads suit mixed-age groups. That shows in realistic pacing without rushing your party.
Private transfer from Ocho Rios toward Saint Mary or Portland depending on which linked product you booked. The coastal and inland roads are part of the experience with optional photo stops when time allows.
Pack water and snacks for Rio Grande days because travel time is longer before you reach the put-in.
Meet your captain and board a wide bamboo raft for a slow journey through rainforest-lined water. Two guests per raft is typical, with the captain steering through gentle sections.
Life vests are available on request and the pace suits conversation and photos between overhanging trees.
Ride back to your hotel or cruise pier with time to dry off in the air-conditioned van. Your driver confirms drop-off at the same lobby or pier exit you started from.
Ask about a snack stop on the return leg if you skipped lunch near the river.
Rio Grande is the classic long bamboo journey through Portland rainforest with more time on the road from Ocho Rios. Rio Nuevo is closer for a shorter day with the same slow poling style on calmer water.

Rio Grande sessions often last around ninety minutes each way on the water with captains poling two guests per raft. Rio Nuevo is shorter but still unhurried and scenic through forest canopy.
Exact timing depends on water level and which operator base you visit on the day, and your driver keeps the return leg realistic after the pole.
Rafting site fees are usually paid locally unless your confirmation says otherwise. Bring cash for admissions and optional photos at the put-in.
Your driver can remind you before arrival at the river base. Share your group size and any mobility or ship timing needs ahead of travel so we can confirm details with your driver.
Many families enjoy the gentle pace, though infants and very young children should be discussed with us ahead of travel for seating on the raft.
Share ages ahead of travel so captains can plan safe seating with adults. North-coast drivers on this route adjust pickup windows for cruise mornings and keep realistic time at each gate so your party is not rushed between swims, climbs or trail sections.

Wear clothes you can get slightly damp and bring a towel for after the raft. Sun cream and a hat matter on open sections between overhanging trees.
Secure footwear for short walks to the put-in is easier than loose flip-flops on wet banks, and a light long sleeve helps with sun between shade gaps.
Two linked IDs share this page for Rio Grande versus Rio Nuevo departures with the same private transport style from Ocho Rios.
Pick the product title that names the river you want, and contact us if both titles look similar on the product page.
Light rain often continues because the jungle canopy provides cover, but captains may delay launch if lightning or river conditions are unsafe.
Pack a light rain jacket and keep your phone handy for driver updates on travel morning, especially on longer Rio Grande road days.
We collect from Ocho Rios hotels and the cruise pier unless you note another approved property ahead of travel. Return drop-off matches pickup.
Share your group size so we assign a van with room for bags after the raft, and confirm your hotel or pier name ahead of travel.
