Mountain paths above Grindelwald lead into wide-open scenery where alpine meadows, forest tracks and high viewpoints come together in a relaxed walking experience. Time is shared between gentle hiking, learning about the surroundings, and a lakeside picnic beside one of the region’s most recognised mountain lakes.
Leaving from the First gondola station, the trail quickly transitions from village surroundings into alpine terrain with forested sections and wide mountain paths. Gradual elevation gain keeps the pace steady while opening up early views across the valley.
Further along, flower-filled meadows (seasonal) replace the tree cover, creating long stretches of open walking with clear sightlines to surrounding peaks and glaciers. Regular pauses allow time to take in the environment, with guidance offered on the landscape and local alpine features.
At Bachalpsee, time slows down beside the water for a relaxed picnic and break. Reflections of the mountains often sit clearly on the lake surface before the return journey begins, followed by a visit to the First Cliff Walk for an elevated viewpoint over the region.
Grindelwald sits in the Bernese Oberland, framed by high peaks and accessed easily by rail and mountain transport links. The First station sits above the village, acting as the gateway into higher alpine walking territory.
Bachalpsee lies further into the mountains, known for its still waters and open surroundings that reflect the surrounding peaks on calm days. The route sits within a popular hiking region, though quieter stretches appear away from the main viewpoints.
Comfort on light mountain walking trails is enough to enjoy this experience, as the route is designed for easy access and steady pacing. No technical skills or previous hiking experience are needed. This trip is for ages 15+.
Supportive footwear with grip is recommended due to uneven paths and changing surfaces along the trail. Weather can vary quickly at altitude, so layered clothing and a waterproof jacket are useful throughout.
Guided routes are shaped by detailed local knowledge of the Jungfrau Region, focusing on well-paced walking and carefully chosen viewpoints. Attention is given to timing, conditions, and quieter sections of the trail.
Small group experiences allow flexibility during the day, with space for photography, rest stops and picnic time without rushing. Each outing is adapted to weather and group comfort to keep the experience smooth and enjoyable.
Expect an easy walking route with gradual incline rather than steep or technical sections. The path is designed to be accessible for most fitness levels.
Regular pauses and a steady pace help keep the experience comfortable, even for those new to mountain walking.
Around 3 hours are typically needed for the full experience, including walking, breaks and time at the lake. The return follows the same path back to the starting point.
Timing can shift slightly depending on weather and how long is spent at viewpoints or the picnic stop.
Approximately 6 km is covered in total, with around 150 metres of elevation gain spread across the route. The climb is gradual and evenly distributed.
This makes it suitable for those looking for a scenic walk rather than a strenuous hike.
Picnic snacks and a non-alcoholic drink are included and served beside the lake. Time is set aside to sit, relax and enjoy the setting.
The stop is designed as a calm break rather than a rushed meal, allowing full enjoyment of the surroundings.
Yes, beginners can comfortably take part due to the gentle terrain and steady pace. No prior hiking experience is required.
The route works well for families (children must be aged 15+) and casual walkers who want to experience alpine scenery without difficult sections.
Reliable walking shoes with good grip are recommended due to uneven paths. Layers work best due to changing temperatures in the mountains.
A waterproof jacket is useful even in good weather, as conditions can change quickly at higher altitude.
Time is spent relaxing by the lake, enjoying a picnic and taking in the reflections of surrounding peaks. It is the main pause point of the experience.
Photography, rest and quiet time are all encouraged before starting the return journey.
