Bulgan is a low-profile northern aimag with small towns, wheat fields and forested hills on the approach to Khövsgöl or the Selenge River. Few travellers treat it as a main destination, but it breaks the long drive from Ulaanbaatar to the lake and holds access tracks to quieter camps.
Bulgan town has basic guesthouses for drivers breaking the Murun or Arkhangai journey. Wheat fields and forest patches break up the steppe views, and birdlife is richer here than on the open Gobi drives.
Orkhon River tributaries cut through low hills here, and small bridges mark the transition from central steppe to northern forest. Drivers use Bulgan to avoid backtracking through Ulaanbaatar when looping lake and monastery routes.
Spring wheat turns fields bright green against brown hills, and storks nest on telegraph poles near villages. Birders sometimes pause for an hour when migrating cranes pass overhead in April.
Drivers often pause here for lunch when the Murun road feels endless.
