Build confidence in close-quarters tidal manoeuvring with this practical training session. Designed for skippers who already have basic boat handling skills, the course focuses on working with tides rather than against them, improving positioning, approach control, and decision-making in rivers and tidal marinas. Real-world exercises ensure skills translate directly to your own boating.
You’ll begin with a short shoreside briefing covering tidal flow, slack water, eddies, prop walk, and pivot points. Theory is tailored to the specific location and vessel type, giving practical tips for safer and smoother manoeuvres.
On-water exercises include approaching berths, holding station, managing drift, and performing recoveries under instructor supervision. The session is structured to build confidence progressively, allowing plenty of opportunity for questions and guided feedback.
Training is adapted to your skill level, whether handling a small motorboat or a larger vessel. By the end, participants will be able to berth confidently and safely in tidal waters.
Sessions are delivered on tidal rivers and marinas such as the Beaulieu River, Hamble, Medina (Cowes), Lymington, Yarmouth, and Portsmouth. Locations are selected to provide realistic tidal flow conditions for effective skill development.
These waterways offer varying currents, tight spaces, and real-world scenarios to challenge skippers while remaining safe under expert supervision. Practical experience is reinforced with demonstrations and step-by-step guidance.
Participants should already have basic boat handling skills and feel comfortable operating a vessel in open water. No formal RYA qualifications are required.
A basic understanding of throttle control, steering, and approach planning is recommended. The session builds on this foundation, teaching precise tidal manoeuvring and decision-making for tight berths and flowing rivers.
Sessions are led by an experienced instructor with decades of coastal and tidal powerboating expertise. Guidance is tailored to your vessel, experience level, and learning goals to ensure rapid skill development.
The training blends theory, demonstration, and hands-on practice in small groups, giving personalised feedback throughout. Skippers leave with the ability to confidently handle tidal berthing scenarios, applying techniques safely and independently in real-world conditions.
This session is suitable for skippers with basic boat handling skills who want to improve their confidence in tidal rivers and marinas. It is also useful for crew members looking to assist effectively during berthing.
It focuses on building practical experience, so participants leave able to manage tidal flow, tight spaces, and close-quarters manoeuvres independently.
The training applies primarily to powerboats, but sailing vessels that require berthing in tidal locations can also benefit. Techniques are taught to be adaptable across vessel types.
Using your own boat is an option and helps to directly translate skills learned to familiar vessels and mooring locations.
About 80% of the session is on the water, with 20% dedicated to location-specific tidal theory. This includes slack water, eddies, pivot points, and prop walk guidance.
Practical exercises involve approaching berths, holding station, using bursts of power, and recovering from misjudged approaches, giving hands-on confidence in tidal conditions.
No formal RYA qualifications are necessary. Participants should have a basic understanding of boat handling to maximise the benefits of the training.
This course is designed to progress skippers from competent basic operators to confident tidal-handling experts.
Sessions typically take place on tidal rivers such as the Beaulieu, Hamble, Medina, Lymington, Yarmouth, and Portsmouth. Locations are chosen for realistic training conditions.
Alternative locations may be arranged depending on your objectives, experience, and local mooring requirements.
Yes, bespoke one-to-one training is available, including using your own vessel. This ensures a fully personalised learning experience.
Sessions are adapted to your skill level and vessel type, providing hands-on guidance tailored to individual needs.
You will understand how tidal flows affect boat handling, including recognising slack water, eddies, and stronger currents. This knowledge allows you to use tides to assist berthing instead of fighting them.
Learning to work with the tide enhances safety, efficiency, and confidence in close-quarters manoeuvres in rivers and marinas.
