Explore the coastal waters of Unawatuna with a guided scuba diving session suitable for beginners and relaxed recreational divers. Over two hours, you’ll experience Sri Lanka’s reef systems and, depending on conditions, nearby wreck sites that attract diverse marine life.
Your dive begins with a structured briefing covering equipment use, equalisation, underwater communication signals and buoyancy basics. If you are new to diving, instructors will guide you through breathing techniques and simple skills in shallow water before progressing to deeper sections.
Once prepared, you’ll travel to a selected dive site based on sea conditions and visibility. Unawatuna offers a mix of coral reef formations and accessible wreck sites. Many wrecks are now artificial reefs, supporting soft corals, schooling fish and smaller macro species. The underwater terrain often includes rock outcrops, sandy patches and coral-covered structures.
The underwater portion typically lasts 30–45 minutes depending on air consumption and comfort level. Throughout the dive, your instructor remains close, managing depth and pace carefully. After surfacing, you’ll return to shore for equipment removal and a short debrief.
Unawatuna is situated on Sri Lanka’s southern coast near the historic city of Galle. The region is well known for its accessible dive sites located within short boat rides or manageable shore entries. Reef systems sit relatively close to land, making dive logistics efficient.
The coastline combines coral reefs, rocky structures and historic wreck sites that have become habitats for marine life. Conditions vary seasonally, but during peak months the sea is generally calm, supporting beginner-friendly diving environments. Public transport is available nearby, and local taxis provide flexible access to the meeting point.
Participants must be at least 8 years old and comfortable in open water. No prior diving experience is required for introductory dives, though you must be able to follow instructions clearly and remain calm underwater.
This activity is not recommended for pregnant travellers or individuals with back or heart conditions. Diving involves pressure changes and controlled breathing. If you have medical concerns, consult a healthcare professional before booking.
Dives are delivered by trained professionals using maintained, safety-checked equipment. Briefings are clear and structured to ensure beginners understand key principles before entering the water. Small group management allows for closer supervision and controlled pacing.
Operations are designed around responsible marine practices. Divers are encouraged to observe without disturbing reef ecosystems, helping preserve the underwater habitats that make Unawatuna a rewarding location for exploration.
No licence is required for introductory dives. Beginners receive full instruction before entering the water and remain closely supervised throughout.
Certified divers are also welcome and can have the dive adjusted to suit their experience level.
Depth depends on experience and site conditions. Introductory dives are kept within conservative recreational limits.
