After meeting your guide in Donostia - San Sebastián, you’ll be fitted with your chosen road bike before setting off along some of the best cycling roads in the Guipuzcoa region. Routes are selected based on the group’s experience and riding pace, allowing everyone to enjoy the day comfortably while still taking on rewarding climbs and longer rolling sections. Coastal roads, mountain viewpoints, and quieter inland stretches all combine to create a varied ride with very little traffic compared to many popular cycling destinations.
Several traditional Basque towns are visited along the way, giving riders the chance to stop, take photos, and experience the local atmosphere outside the city centre. Climbs range from steady winding ascents to shorter punchier hills, with guides adapting the pace throughout the ride to keep the group together where possible. The route is designed to balance physical challenge with enjoyable scenery rather than focusing purely on performance.
Partway through the experience, there will be a stop to enjoy a pintxo and a drink while recovering some energy before continuing the ride. Guides share local knowledge throughout the tour and can adjust the route length slightly depending on weather conditions, rider confidence, and the overall pace of the group.
Donostia - San Sebastián provides an excellent starting point for road cycling thanks to its direct access to both coastal roads and mountain terrain. Within a short distance from the city centre, riders can reach winding roads that pass fishing villages, green hillsides, and quieter inland areas that feel far removed from the busier tourist spots. The combination of sea views and climbing routes makes the region especially popular with cyclists looking for varied terrain in a single ride.
The wider Basque Country is known for smooth roads, strong cycling culture, and local cafés serving traditional food along many popular riding routes. Depending on the chosen route and conditions on the day, the experience may include sections overlooking the coastline as well as peaceful countryside roads with long flowing descents and steady climbs.
A reasonable level of fitness and previous cycling experience are recommended for this tour due to the climbing involved and the overall distance covered during the ride. Riders should feel comfortable cycling on public roads and handling longer uphill sections at a steady pace.
Routes are adapted to suit the group where possible, making the experience suitable for both confident recreational cyclists and more experienced riders looking to explore the area with a local guide. Comfortable sports clothing and suitable footwear should be brought along for the ride.
Local knowledge plays a big part in shaping each ride, allowing guests to experience quieter roads and lesser-known routes that many visitors would not normally find on their own. The guiding team are passionate cyclists who know the surrounding region well and focus on creating enjoyable rides rather than simply covering distance as quickly as possible.
Groups are kept small with a maximum of eight riders per guide, helping maintain a more personal experience and allowing the route and pace to be adapted throughout the day. Riders also benefit from high-quality bike options, scenic route planning, and support from multilingual guides familiar with the cycling conditions across the Basque Country.
Group sizes are kept between 1 and 8 people to ensure a more personal experience and allow guides to adapt the ride to the group’s pace and ability level. Smaller groups also make it easier to move through both city routes and countryside trails comfortably.
If your group has more than 8 people, please use the “Can’t find a date or have a large group?” button above the booking form to send an enquiry. Larger private groups can often be arranged depending on guide availability and the type of ride you are looking for.
Previous road cycling experience is recommended as the route includes climbing and distances of up to 55 kilometres. Riders should feel comfortable using road bikes and cycling for several hours with varied terrain throughout the route.
The pace is adapted depending on the group, so the experience can still work well for confident recreational cyclists who ride regularly but may not train competitively.
Riders can choose between high-quality road bike models depending on their preference and riding style. Both options are suitable for the varied terrain found throughout the Basque Country routes.
Bikes are prepared before the tour begins, and guides can help with sizing and setup to ensure comfort during the ride.
Most of the routes use quieter roads with less traffic than many larger cycling destinations. The area surrounding San Sebastián offers a good mix of coastal and inland roads that are well suited to road cycling.
Guides carefully choose routes based on riding conditions, traffic levels, and the ability of the group on the day.
Comfortable sports clothing suitable for cycling is recommended, along with trainers or cycling shoes if you prefer to bring your own. Layers can also be useful depending on the weather conditions.
Temperatures can change throughout the ride, especially when climbing into higher areas away from the coastline.
A stop for a traditional pintxo and a drink is included during the ride, giving everyone time to recover and relax before continuing.
Many of the local cafés and bars visited along cycling routes are popular meeting spots for local riders and add to the overall experience.
Weather conditions are checked before every ride, and guides may adapt the route if needed to ensure safer and more comfortable riding conditions.
Light rain does not always prevent the tour from running, although more severe conditions may lead to changes or rescheduling depending on safety considerations.
