Electric bicycles and standard bikes provide an easy and enjoyable way to see Islay without the strain of long rides. With a comfortable step-through frame and pedal-assist technology, riders can confidently tackle hills and longer distances while visiting distilleries, historical sites, and scenic viewpoints. These bikes allow you to enjoy more of the island in a single day, whether you want a relaxed ride or a longer touring route.
Premium e-bikes include models with large batteries, suspension seats, and Bosch Performance motors. They are designed to provide smooth assistance on hills and long-distance rides, making them suitable for challenging routes and longer tours. Gears are easy to operate and designed to offer a wide range for climbing and cruising comfortably.
Standard e-bikes feature slightly smaller batteries and motors but still provide pedal-assist to make cycling less strenuous. They have multi-speed drivetrains similar to traditional hybrid bikes, offering versatility on both flat roads and gentle inclines. These bikes are ideal for riders who want extra support on longer rides without overcomplicating the controls.
Non-electric bikes are lightweight with high-quality gears and braking systems, making them suitable for riders who prefer traditional cycling. They come with pannier bags for carrying essentials and provide a reliable, straightforward option for exploring Islay at your own pace.
Child seats are available for younger riders, featuring a secure 5-point harness and a rear-mounted design for safety and comfort.
Based in Port Ellen, the hire point offers immediate access to Islay’s key attractions, including famous distilleries, historical sites, and scenic coastal routes. Delivery and collection options are available across the island, making it easy to start your cycling adventure wherever you are staying.
The island offers a mix of quiet single-track roads and more challenging hills, and the bikes are designed to handle these conditions safely and comfortably. Nearby landmarks include Kildalton Cross, the Three Distillery path, and the American Monument, all accessible within a short ride from Port Ellen.
Riders should be comfortable cycling on roads and able to handle the bike safely. Pedal-assist bikes still require pedalling, so basic cycling skills are necessary for balance, gear changing, and hill climbs. Helmets, locks, and safety equipment are provided with every hire. Children aged 14+ may ride e-bikes with an adult responsible for the hire, and those under 18 require supervision.
Weather can affect rides, so it is recommended to check forecasts and avoid cycling in unsafe conditions. In the event of cancellation due to weather, refunds are provided. Riders are responsible for returning bikes to the hire point, though delivery and collection options are offered for convenience.
The fleet includes premium and standard e-bikes, as well as non-electric bikes from high-quality manufacturers, ensuring reliability, comfort, and smooth performance. Each bike features modern technology such as Bosch motors, suspension seats, and user-friendly gears to make cycling accessible and enjoyable for all levels.
Support and guidance are provided for first-time e-bike users, including instruction on battery use and safety tips. Additional features such as pannier bags, locks, helmets, and child seats enhance the cycling experience. Multi-day hires benefit from battery charging and storage options to ensure a seamless touring experience.
The distance depends on rider weight, terrain, weather conditions, and the level of assistance used. Standard e-bikes generally travel up to 20 miles, while premium e-bikes can reach up to 60 miles.
Bikes can be pedalled without battery assistance if needed. Riders should be prepared for a heavier ride when the battery is depleted and plan their route accordingly to ensure a safe return.
For safety reasons, bookings are cancelled if conditions make cycling unsafe. In these cases, a full refund is provided to the customer.
It is advised to monitor weather forecasts before setting out and to dress appropriately. Bikes should not be used in hazardous conditions, such as heavy rain, strong winds, or icy roads.
Yes, e-bikes can still be pedalled without assistance. Riders should expect more effort as the bike is heavier without battery support.
It is the rider’s responsibility to return the bike safely. Planning your route to stay within the battery range is recommended to avoid unexpected exertion.
Yes, these e-bikes provide pedal-assist only. The motor helps proportionally to your pedalling effort, so if you do not pedal, no assistance is provided.
Assistance levels can be adjusted easily via a handlebar control, allowing riders to select the power they need depending on terrain or effort level.
Children aged 14+ may ride e-bikes if an adult is responsible for the hire. They must be supervised and comply with safe cycling practices.
The child must be confident riding and able to handle basic cycling skills. Riders under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.
In the rare event of a breakdown, riders can contact the hire service for support. If the bike cannot be fixed or swapped, assistance such as arranging transport is provided.
Riders are encouraged to check the bike before setting out, including brakes, gears, and battery charge, to avoid issues during their ride.
No, these bikes are designed for road use only and should not be used on beaches or off-road tracks.
Riders should follow recommended routes and stay on paved or surfaced paths. Using bikes off-road may damage them and void the hire agreement.
Cycling under the influence of alcohol or drugs is illegal and strictly prohibited for safety reasons.
Riders should ensure they are sober and fully capable of handling the bike. Compliance with the law protects both the rider and other road users.
