Step into Tateyama's high alpine world on a full-day journey from Kanazawa or Toyama, combining Japan's tallest waterfall with light walks across dramatic mountain landscapes. From the thunderous drop of Shomyo Falls to Midagahara's marshland and Murodo's volcanic plateau, this guided day reveals a changing mountain environment shaped by snow, water and altitude.
Meet at Kanazawa or Toyama Station and travel into Tateyama's mountain country. The first major stop is Shomyo Falls, where Japan's tallest waterfall drops in four powerful tiers down a sheer rock face.
Continue along the Alpine Route to Midagahara, a broad high-altitude wetland where gentle paths reveal wide mountain views and seasonal alpine plants. The route then climbs further to Murodo, the high plateau at the heart of the range.
Walk at a measured pace through Murodo's volcanic scenery, with time to take in landmarks such as Mikurigaike Pond and the surrounding peaks. After a full day of mountain air, transport returns the group to the chosen station.
Tateyama is one of Japan's most significant mountain landscapes, recognised for centuries of pilgrimage as well as for its remarkable alpine scenery. The route rises from valley waterfalls to exposed plateaus, showing how quickly the environment changes with altitude.

This experience involves several hours outdoors and light walking at altitude, often on well-managed paths but with changing weather and exposed conditions. You should be comfortable walking steadily and taking care around uneven surfaces.
No technical mountaineering skills are required, but bring proper walking shoes, layers, rain protection and sun protection. Carry lunch, snacks and water, as practical food choices may be limited until later in the day.

Choose either the Kanazawa Station meeting point, in front of the information centre near the Kenroku-en Garden exit, or the Toyama Station meeting point, in front of the information centre next to the spiral stair.
Arrive with walking shoes, your food and weather layers ready. The group returns to the selected station after the mountain day, with timing shaped by conditions and Alpine Route operations.
