Collect kit at our beachfront base on Playa de Somo, inside Cantabria's surf reserve. Choose a surfboard and wetsuit package, a stand-up paddleboard, bodyboard and flippers, or skate and surfskate gear, then walk straight onto the sand or the promenade. Staff size boards and suits to you, explain flag colours in plain language and flag if the swell or wind makes a particular craft a poor choice that day.
Check in at the school beside the beach, tell us what you want to ride and how long you need it, and we will fit wetsuits, adjust leashes and point you to the right board or craft for today's conditions. The itinerary steps through collection, your session on the sand or in the water and return when your hire window ends, including where to rinse kit and lock bags. Multi-day hires stay simple once we note your return date and sizes, so you are not repeating paperwork every morning.
This is unguided hire: we give a quick safety brief and honest advice on tides, banks and flagged zones, but you choose whether to paddle out. If Somo is too rough for a SUP or the wind is wrong for skate, we suggest another craft or another slot rather than sending you out unprepared. When you are done, rinse where asked, report any dings and ask the desk about lesson add-ons if you want coaching on the next day.
Playa de Somo faces the Cantabrian Sea east of Santander, with long sandy breaks and a lively surf village behind the dunes. The hire desk on Calle del Surf is a short walk from main beach car parks and the ferry link toward Loredo and Santander.
Somo sits inside Spain's first surf reserve, so beach rules and flagged swimming areas matter even when you are only hiring for an hour. Summer fills the promenade with cafes; shoulder seasons give you more space in the line-up. Parking is in public car parks near the beach rather than at the school door, so allow a few minutes to walk with your kit.
You should be comfortable in the sea for the craft you hire. Soft-top surfboards suit cautious beginners on small days; SUP and bodyboard hire need more confidence if there is wind, current or overhead swell. Skate hire includes helmet and pads; stay within your ability on the concrete and keep away from busy pedestrian zones.
Children need a supervising adult on the beach. Bring swimwear, a towel and warm clothes for after. We can advise on tide and banks at the desk, but you decide whether to paddle out, and you must return kit on time so the next customer is not kept waiting.
We keep a large, refreshed quiver because we teach thousands of lessons each year, so hire kit matches what our instructors trust in the water. Quiksilver and Roxy wetsuits and Torq boards rotate regularly rather than running until they fail, and staff will swap you to a bigger board at the counter if you admit the swell feels heavy.
You get straight answers on whether Somo fits your plan that day. If you later want coaching, we can point you to the right lesson or camp without starting from scratch with a new provider, using the sizes and notes we already saved from hire check-in.
Arrive at Calle del Surf, confirm your booking and tell us your experience level and what you want to ride. We allocate wetsuits and boards from the rack, explain flag colours and where swimming is restricted, and note your return time.
Longer hires may include a quick note on rinsing kit and where to lock bags. Course and camp students should mention their booking for any on-site discount.
Walk to Playa de Somo with your kit. For surf and bodyboard hire you choose your own peak within safe limits; for SUP we may suggest a calmer stretch if the wind is up.
Skate hires stay on paved areas nearby with pads fitted. Take your time warming up and stay within your ability; this part of the day is yours without a guide in the water.
Bring equipment back at the agreed time, rinse where asked and report any damage so we can repair or retire kit. Late returns can affect the next customer, so message us if you are delayed.
If you want another day or a lesson add-on, the desk can extend hire or book instruction while your size and preferences are fresh.
Come to Calle del Surf, 11, 39140 Somo. Use public parking near Playa de Somo and walk to the school on the promenade. Arrive a few minutes before your hire slot so we can fit kit.
Surfboards with wetsuits, wetsuits on their own, stand-up paddleboards with paddles, bodyboards with flippers, and skate, surfskate or longskate setups with helmet and pads. We stock shortboards, soft tops, longboards and seasonal quivers so you can match the board to the day's shape.
Longer multi-day hires are available for many items without bringing kit back every evening. Tell us your travel dates at the desk so we can reserve the right sizes and explain weekly rates where they apply.
At our base on Calle del Surf, 11, beside Playa de Somo. You kit up there and walk to the water or the nearby paved areas used for skate hire.
Changing rooms, showers and lockers are in the same building as the desk, so you can leave bags securely before you head to the beach.
No. This listing is hire only. Staff help with sizing and a short safety note, then you are on your own in the water or on the board.
Ask at the desk about surf, SUP or bodyboard lessons if you want an instructor with you on another day.
Eight years for most beach kit with an adult present on the sand. Younger children are usually happier in a family lesson where an instructor manages the group and the kit.
Skate hire includes helmet and pads, but parents should stay close and set ground rules before wheels roll. We can advise on the calmest craft if you are unsure.
Not for a soft board on a small, clean day. SUP, bodyboard and performance shortboards need more water confidence when there is wind, current or overhead swell.
Tell us honestly what you have tried before so we can hand over a stable setup. We would rather swap you to a bigger board at the desk than see you struggling outside the break.
Rain alone rarely stops hire. If the beach is unsafe, lifeguards close zones, or a craft is clearly unsuitable, we will say so and help you pick another item or come back when conditions improve.
Check conditions the evening before if a swell is forecast, especially for SUP hire. We can sometimes suggest a better time slot on the same day if the tide turns.
Yes. Multi-day and weekly rates apply to many items and are shown on the options where we offer them. For road trips you can often keep kit between days once we note your return date at the desk.
Confirm your final return day when you collect kit so we do not allocate the same board to another customer mid-week. Photo ID may be requested on longer hires.
Yes on site for many course and camp students once you are enrolled with us. Mention your lesson or camp when you collect hire kit and bring any reference we gave you.
Group rates are available for schools, universities and team events. Get in touch before you travel with group size and dates so we can quote and hold stock.
Swimwear, a towel, dry clothes and sunscreen. A bottle of water helps on hot days and flip-flops protect feet on hot sand.
Leave valuables in a locker or your car; use a waterproof pouch if you take a phone to the water's edge. Your own wetsuit is fine if you only need a board.
Often yes for day hires if another size is free and conditions change. Ask at the desk rather than swapping without checking, so we can update your paperwork.
We stock many shapes and brands, including test boards from leading shapers, so you can try something different within reason during the same paid period.
