Take your first step into freediving with an entry-level course that combines online learning with practical pool sessions. You will build confidence in the water while learning the essential techniques to freedive safely with a buddy. On completion, you will achieve the SSI Basic Freediver certification.
Your training begins with online theory modules covering the fundamentals of freediving. These include safety procedures, basic techniques, and preparation for breath-hold diving. Completing this portion before entering the water ensures you have a solid understanding of the principles and can focus on practical skills during in-water sessions.
Pool sessions focus on applying your learning in a safe, controlled environment. You will practise breath-hold dives, relaxation techniques, and buddy skills under the supervision of an instructor. Optional open water training dives are available at locations such as Anglesey and Capernwray Quarry, allowing you to extend your experience beyond the pool if desired.
Training is based at St Martins, Oswestry, in a 25-metre pool with a depth of 3 metres. This provides a controlled setting for learning the basics of freediving, with an emphasis on safety and confidence building. Sessions take place on Monday evenings, offering regular opportunities to train and progress.
Optional open water training is arranged at Anglesey and Capernwray Quarry. These locations provide beginner-friendly conditions for practising freediving in natural settings, giving participants a chance to experience breath-hold diving in deeper, open environments under professional supervision.
Participants should be comfortable in the water and able to swim. No previous freediving or scuba experience is required, making this course accessible to complete beginners.
A basic level of fitness is recommended to safely perform breath-hold exercises and underwater movements. The course emphasises safety and gradual skill development, so participants can progress at their own pace while building confidence.
The course is delivered under SSI, one of the largest and most respected diving training organisations worldwide. With decades of experience, SSI provides consistent, high-quality teaching materials and professional guidance, ensuring participants receive thorough and reliable instruction.
Training sessions are small and instructor-led, giving you personalised attention throughout the course. Participants benefit from a structured approach that combines theory, pool practice, and optional open water experience, providing a clear pathway to gaining Basic Freediver certification.
