Leave Nagoya for a full day of forest waterfalls, wide grassland and quiet mountain scenery in Muro Akame Aoyama Quasi-National Park. This active guided experience follows the clear waters of Akame Valley before rising to the wind-shaped landscapes of Soni Highlands, with time to notice the remarkable ecology along the way.
Meet at Nagoya Station and travel out towards Akame Valley, with a stop on the route for practical supplies. Your guide introduces the region and its habitats before the forest trail begins beside clear water and a succession of waterfalls.
Walk the approximately 4 km Akame 48 Waterfalls route, pausing to appreciate the different falls, plants and wildlife. The valley is a habitat for the protected Japanese giant salamander, and a visit near the trailhead gives you a chance to learn more about this extraordinary amphibian.
In the afternoon, continue to Soni Highlands beneath Mount Kuroso. Follow paths through broad fields of pampas grass, taking in changing valley views before the return journey to Nagoya.
Muro Akame Aoyama Quasi-National Park brings together steep wooded valleys, fast-moving streams and open uplands in central Japan. Akame Valley is particularly atmospheric, with cool shade, mossy rock and waterfalls appearing at regular intervals along the trail.
Soni Highlands offers a complete contrast to the valley: broad, breezy grasslands stretching across the hillside. The scale and seasonal colour make it a memorable setting for a slower walk after the more enclosed waterfall route.
This is a challenging, active day for guests comfortable walking on uneven natural ground for several hours. The waterfall trail and highland paths require good footwear, steady balance and a willingness to keep moving through changing conditions.
No specialist hiking background is required, but you should be fit enough for the distance and long day. Bring water, food, sun protection and layers, and be prepared for heat in summer or cool, wet conditions in the valley.
