Experience one of Peru's most famous hiking routes on a rewarding full-day adventure to Rainbow Mountain, also known as Vinicunca. This moderate trek takes you through spectacular Andean scenery before reaching one of the country's most colourful natural landmarks, making it an ideal challenge before taking on longer mountain hikes.
Before sunrise, you'll be collected from your accommodation in Cusco and begin the drive towards the village of Cusipata. After around two hours on the road, you'll enjoy a freshly prepared breakfast before continuing deeper into the Andes, passing traditional farming communities, valleys, canyons and ancient agricultural terraces on the way to the trailhead.
Once you arrive, your guide will provide a briefing before the hike begins beneath the towering presence of Apu Ausangate, one of Peru's most important sacred mountains. The trail climbs gradually over approximately two hours, allowing plenty of opportunities to pause, admire the scenery and adjust to the altitude. Along the route you'll encounter herds of alpacas and llamas, mountain streams, small lagoons and sweeping views across the surrounding peaks.
After covering approximately six kilometres, you'll arrive at Rainbow Mountain, where striking bands of mineral-rich colours create one of Peru's most recognisable natural landscapes. You'll have time to enjoy the views, take photographs and appreciate the unique surroundings before beginning the descent back to Cusipata. A well-earned lunch awaits before returning comfortably to Cusco, completing an unforgettable day in the Andes.
Rainbow Mountain, locally known as Vinicunca, lies high in the Peruvian Andes close to the impressive Ausangate mountain range. The journey from Cusco passes through remote villages and traditional farming landscapes, providing a glimpse into everyday life beyond the city's popular tourist attractions.
Reaching the summit rewards hikers with panoramic views across colourful mountains, snow-capped peaks and open valleys. Wildlife including alpacas, llamas and native bird species are regularly spotted throughout the hike, adding even more to the experience.
This adventure is suitable for participants aged 15 and over with a moderate level of fitness. The hike involves walking approximately six kilometres at high altitude, with a steady uphill climb that can feel more demanding because of the thinner air.
Spending at least a day or two in Cusco before the excursion is highly recommended to help your body adjust to the altitude. Good walking shoes, warm clothing and plenty of water will help you enjoy the hike more comfortably.
Small groups of no more than 15 participants create a more enjoyable hiking experience, allowing your guide to provide plenty of support while maintaining a comfortable pace for everyone. Native local guides also share valuable knowledge about the surrounding mountains, wildlife and traditions throughout the day.
Private transport, meals, entrance tickets and walking poles are all included, making it easy to focus on the adventure itself. With punctual hotel collection and personalised service from start to finish, everything is organised so you can simply enjoy the hike.
This is considered a moderate hike, but the high altitude makes it more challenging than a walk of the same distance at sea level. The trail climbs steadily for around two hours before reaching the summit, so a reasonable level of fitness is recommended.
Although the ascent is gradual, there are regular opportunities to stop, catch your breath and enjoy the scenery. Your guide will maintain a comfortable pace suitable for the group.
Rainbow Mountain sits at over 5,000 metres above sea level, making it one of Peru's highest and most popular hiking destinations. The altitude is often a bigger challenge than the distance itself.
Many visitors choose to spend at least one or two days in Cusco before attempting the hike, giving their bodies time to acclimatise and reducing the likelihood of altitude-related discomfort.
The hiking section covers approximately six kilometres, with the uphill section taking around two hours depending on the group's pace and weather conditions.
After spending time at the summit, you'll follow the same route back down before enjoying lunch and returning to Cusco by vehicle. Are horses available?
Yes. Horses are available locally for anyone who feels they may need assistance during parts of the climb.
Horse hire is optional and is not included in the tour price, so payment is made directly if you decide to use one.
The route passes through traditional grazing areas where alpacas and llamas are commonly seen throughout the day. Native birds can also often be spotted flying across the valleys and mountain slopes.
These animals are an important part of local life and add to the authentic atmosphere of hiking through the Peruvian Andes.
Breakfast and lunch are both included during the excursion, giving you plenty of energy before and after the hike.
Vegetarian and other dietary requirements can also be catered for, helping everyone enjoy suitable meals throughout the day.
