Limestone peaks sit in morning mist as you spend two days weaving through Lan Ha Bay on a compact overnight cruise built for kayaking, swimming and village cycling. Evenings on the sundeck and mornings on the water give you time to slow down without missing the famous karst scenery south of Ha Long.
Day one begins with a road transfer from Hanoi or a harbour meet on Cat Ba, then boarding by tender at Cai Beo Port. You cruise among islets, enjoy lunch on deck and paddle through Dark and Bright caves when park access allows, with swimming in clear water and an optional spring roll cooking session before sunset and dinner on board.
Day two starts with breakfast overlooking the bay, a tender ride to Viet Hai for a guided cycle or electric cart through the national park village, then lunch as you sail back toward port. When your fare includes the return bus you continue toward Hanoi; Cat Ba only tickets finish on the island.
Lan Ha Bay lies south of the busier Ha Long routes, with steep karsts, hidden lagoons and floating homes that see fewer large tour boats. The cruise tracks UNESCO listed seascape while keeping distances short enough for relaxed kayaking and swim stops.
Viet Hai village sits in a valley inside Cat Ba National Park, reached by a forest tunnel and rice field paths that contrast with the open water of the first day. Night anchorage places you inside the archipelago rather than on a distant pier.
No kayaking or sailing experience is required. You should be comfortable on a moving vessel overnight, able to use short ladders for tender and kayak access, and happy on flat village cycle paths.
Bring soft luggage, swimwear and light layers for breezy evenings. Crew brief kayaking safety before you enter the water and can suggest easier paddle lines for newcomers.
Teams running these routes focus on small guest numbers so tender runs, kayak gear and meal service stay unhurried. Galley crews cook with fresh fish and produce from coastal markets when available and adjust the timetable when tide or wind changes.
Guides swap cave entries or swim stops when conditions demand it while still covering the main highlights. That on the day flexibility comes from years of working the Gulf of Tonkin rather than rigid scripts that ignore swell or park closures.
Hanoi departures collect guests in the Old Quarter between about 7:45 and 8:30 before the highway transfer to Hai Phong and Cat Ba.
Cat Ba only fares meet at Cai Beo Port for tender boarding around mid morning. Your confirmation shows the exact window and meeting point.
Soft bag, swimwear, trainers for cycling, light rain jacket, sun hat, refillable bottle and any personal medication.
Camera dry pouch is useful for kayaking. Pack a small amount of cash for optional drinks or souvenirs in the village.
Most routes board at Cai Beo Port on Cat Ba after a road transfer from Hanoi, Hai Phong or Ninh Binh, depending on the fare you hold. Crew meet you at the pier and help with bags onto the tender.
Your confirmation lists the pickup window and meeting point for that sailing. Arrive a few minutes early so the tender can leave on time for the cruise boat.
Kayaking around Dark and Bright caves is included when sea conditions and park rules allow. Life jackets and a short safety talk come before you enter the water.
Guides stay near the group in lagoon areas and can suggest easier lines if you are new to paddling. You may remain on the cruise boat if you prefer not to kayak that day.
Cabin category depends on the package you select, including bed layout and whether you booked a balcony room. All cabins sit on the same small vessel.
Guest numbers stay limited so corridors and meal service stay calm. Check occupancy rules on your ticket before travel day so you know who shares the room.
Lunch and dinner on day one and breakfast and lunch on day two are included on standard packages. The kitchen serves seafood and vegetarian dishes.
Mention dietary needs ahead of travel so the galley can plan alternatives. Some drinks sit outside the meal plan and can be bought on board.
Families are welcome on this overnight cruise and child fares may be available for your sailing date. Young guests travel with an adult at all times.
Adults should supervise children on decks, tenders and kayaks. Crew may postpone cave paddling for very young guests when the sea is choppy, while meals and village visits still run.
Shared bus pickup from Hanoi Old Quarter is included on many fares. Cat Ba only rates assume you reach the port independently.
Transport from your accommodation outside the listed pickup zone is not included unless your ticket says so. Allow buffer time for rush hour traffic on the highway.
Bring swimwear, light layers, sun protection, insect repellent for the village ride and a small day pack for kayaking. Soft sided luggage works best on boats.
Pack any medication you need, as village stops are remote and shops are limited. A dry bag helps keep cameras and phones safe during kayak launch.
The captain may alter routes, skip cave kayaking or adjust tender timings when wind, rain or swell affect safety. Activity blocks can move later or earlier on the same day.
Follow crew instructions on the day. The operator will explain next steps if the departure cannot run safely.
We recommend insurance that covers water activities, cycling and overnight travel in Vietnam. Medical evacuation cover is useful if you are far from hospital.
Personal belongings stay your responsibility unless your policy says otherwise. Missed connections due to traffic delays are also for you to manage with your insurer.
You can stay near the tender landing or walk shorter village loops if cycling is not for you. You will still see rice fields and local homes at an easy pace.
Guides keep the group together for mixed fitness. They can suggest an electric cart when that option is available on the day, so nobody is left waiting at the boat.
