Discover the enjoyment of travelling across the water in a traditional open canoe while exploring some of the most scenic waterways in northern England. Perfect for beginners, families and groups of friends, these sessions combine paddling skills, exploration and plenty of opportunities to relax and enjoy your surroundings.
Starting with a practical introduction on the shoreline, your instructor will explain the basics of canoe control, paddling techniques and working together effectively on the water. Open canoes are typically paddled in pairs, making them ideal for friends, couples and families looking to share the experience.
Once afloat, you'll begin exploring the chosen venue while learning how to steer, turn and move efficiently across the water. Beginners quickly gain confidence, and the relaxed pace allows plenty of time to enjoy the surroundings while developing new skills. For groups looking for extra stability, canoes can also be linked together to create a rafted canoe system.
Throughout the session, there are opportunities to take part in games, challenges and confidence-building activities. Depending on the venue and conditions, participants may even have the chance to cool off with a swim or enjoy a break along the shoreline before continuing the journey.
A wide selection of paddling venues allows sessions to be tailored to different abilities, weather conditions and group preferences. Popular Lake District locations include Windermere, Coniston Water, Derwent Water and Bassenthwaite, each offering its own character and scenery.
Beyond the Lake District, sessions also take place on waterways throughout Lancashire and Yorkshire, including Semerwater, the Lancaster Canal and sections of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Private lakes, scout camps and other suitable venues can also be used for bespoke group bookings.
No previous canoeing experience is required. The sessions are specifically designed to introduce beginners to paddlesports in a fun and supportive environment.
Participants should be comfortable around water and prepared to take part in light physical activity throughout the session.
Sharing a canoe creates a social and enjoyable experience that works equally well for families, friends, schools and groups. The combination of expert instruction, carefully selected venues and quality equipment helps participants quickly gain confidence while enjoying time outdoors.
Making use of extensive local knowledge, Innes and the instructional team select locations that provide the best possible experience based on the conditions and the group's ability. Their friendly approach ensures sessions remain welcoming, engaging and enjoyable from start to finish.

Your instructor will provide guidance throughout the session and help you build confidence on the water.
Most open canoes are paddled by two people working together, although arrangements can vary depending on the group.
Your instructor will organise boats in a way that best suits the participants and the venue being used.
A rafted canoe system involves connecting two canoes together to create a larger, more stable platform on the water.
This can be particularly useful for families, younger participants or those looking for additional stability while learning.
