The National 3 Peaks Challenge is a UK trekking event where participants climb the three highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales within 24 hours, including the driving between mountains. Often undertaken to raise money for charity, it is also a personal test of endurance, fitness and mental strength. The challenge offers moments that stay with you and a unique sense of achievement on reaching each summit.
Upon arrival, you’ll check into your room, normally allocated as same-sex twin rooms. Single rooms are available at a supplement. After checking in, a short briefing will be held by your mountain leader, covering the challenge, safety, and answering any questions. The remainder of the evening is free to relax, sort kit, and explore Fort William ahead of the challenge.
The route starts gently but becomes steeper as you ascend. Managed paths and zigzags lead to a rockier section halfway up. Your mountain leader will guide you through tricky sections and help maintain a steady pace. Summit photos and a quick snack at the top, then descend the same route back to the bus.
13:00 Transfer to Wasdale Head (approx. 6–6.5 hours, including a 45-minute DVSA legal driver rest stop at a service station)
19:30 Begin Scafell Pike ascent
Depending on timing, you may start Scafell Pike in fading daylight. The paths are managed initially but become rockier near the summit. Your leader will support and guide you throughout. Summit photos, then descend to the bus.
23:30 Transfer to Pen y Pass for Snowdon start point (includes driver changeover)
The night-time transfer allows for rest or sleep. Views from Snowdon’s ascent, especially at sunrise, are memorable. After reaching the summit and completing the descent, you’ll transfer back to your drop-off location for onward travel home.
The trekking routes feature well-maintained paths, rocky sections, and summit plateaus. The Highlands, Lake District and Snowdonia provide iconic British mountain scenery, while the PYG track offers sunrise vistas on Snowdon. Participants will experience the variation of terrain, including gradual and steep ascents, rocky steps, and manageable scrambling on all three peaks.
No prior mountaineering experience is required, but appropriate footwear, layered clothing, and basic trekking equipment are essential. UK-qualified mountain leaders provide full support, including navigation, first aid, and group management, ensuring safety throughout the challenge. Participants are encouraged to follow the provided kit list and fitness tips to maximise their experience.

You’ll be climbing the three highest mountains in Scotland, England, and Wales—Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon/Yr Wyddfa—within 24 hours. This 24-hour timeframe includes the driving between mountains, so you experience both trekking and logistical challenges. Many people take on this challenge for charity fundraising, while others do it for personal achievement or the sense of accomplishment that comes with summiting all three peaks.
The total walking distance is around 23 miles (37 km) with a combined ascent of 3,064 metres (10,052 ft). Each mountain presents unique challenges, and you can expect to spend at least some time walking in darkness. The challenge is tough but rewarding, and those in reasonable shape with some experience of long walks or hiking can successfully complete it.
Completing the three peaks is demanding. Ben Nevis is the tallest at 1,345m, with a steady ascent and rocky sections near the top. Scafell Pike is shorter at 978m but involves a steep, continuous climb. Snowdon, at 1,085m, is climbed last, meaning fatigue is already a factor.
You should be able to walk for at least 6 hours at a consistent fast pace and handle uneven, rocky, or slippery terrain. While technical climbing skills are not required, stamina and concentration are essential. Guides will set the pace, manage the route, and provide support so you can safely reach the summits.
Expect the challenge to take around 24 hours from start to finish. Walking each mountain typically takes 4–6 hours, and about 10 hours is spent driving between peaks, including legally required rest breaks for drivers. Night driving is part of the schedule, so some time will be spent resting in the vehicle.
Your exact timing may vary depending on your pace, how often you stop, and weather conditions. Even if you don’t finish within 24 hours, completing all three peaks is still a significant personal achievement.
You’ll be collected from one of the following locations:
Arriving on time is essential, as transfers, hotel check-ins, and the trekking schedule are tightly planned.
Drop-offs at the end of the challenge are at:
You’ll need sturdy walking boots with ankle support, waterproof jacket and trousers, warm layers, a daypack (20–30 litres), head torch, water (minimum 2 litres per mountain), trekking snacks and any medication. Optional items include sunglasses, trekking poles and a camera.
A spare bag will stay on the bus with extra clothing or items you don’t need on the mountains. Dressing in layers is essential to adapt to changing temperatures. Boots are required due to rocky and sometimes slippery terrain, especially when you’re tired or walking in the dark.
You should be in reasonable physical condition. Each summit involves a significant climb and descent, and the challenge requires sustained effort. Spending some time walking in darkness and enduring long drives between mountains can also be tiring.
Cardiovascular fitness from walking, running, swimming, or cycling will help you prepare. While previous trekking experience is helpful, anyone in good general health who can walk for several hours steadily should be able to complete the challenge. The fitter you are, the more energy you’ll have to enjoy the views and the sense of achievement.
If you need to stop due to fatigue, injury, or other reasons, the guide will manage the situation safely. Depending on where you are on the mountain, it may be possible to return to the bus and continue with the other peaks. Each situation is assessed individually for safety.
Guides set a pace equal to 5kmh for the group to reach their goals of completing the challenge within 24 hours where possible. Dropouts are rare and usually occur lower down the mountains. Your safety always comes first.
Yes, after finishing the challenge, you’ll receive a PDF Challenge Completion Certificate by email. This proves you successfully climbed all three peaks and can be printed if you wish.
The certificate is perfect for personal records, fundraising documentation, or simply to celebrate completing this iconic challenge. It recognises the effort, endurance, and accomplishment involved in finishing the National Three Peaks Challenge.
