Walk a beautifully preserved section of the Nakasendo Trail from Tsumago to Magome on a guided day out from Matsumoto. This 8 km route follows old stone paths through wooded slopes, villages and waterfalls, rewarding steady walkers with the atmosphere of Japan's historic post towns.
After meeting your guide, travel towards the Kiso Valley with a comfort stop en route. In Tsumago, hear how the old post town fitted into the historic Nakasendo before setting out at a measured pace. The route runs through forest, small settlements and stretches of old stone paving, with time for rests and a picnic-style break.
Arriving in Magome is a fitting finish to the walk. Take time to explore its sloping lanes, browse local crafts or pick up a snack before the return journey. The day is shaped around the hike, with guidance and practical support throughout.
The Kiso Valley holds one of the most evocative surviving sections of the old inland road between Edo and Kyoto. Its cedar woods, streams and compact post towns make the walking feel removed from modern city life.
Tsumago and Magome add more than a start and finish to the route. Their timber buildings, water channels and mountain setting provide a strong sense of the travellers who once passed through this valley on foot.
This is best suited to guests comfortable walking for around three hours over 8 km. The route is not technical, but includes uneven surfaces, steps and changes in elevation, so supportive walking shoes are essential.
Bring water, weather-appropriate layers and food for the day. A reasonable level of fitness and confidence on outdoor paths will help you enjoy the walk at its unhurried pace.
The route is led as a proper walking day, with time to notice the details that can be missed when travelling quickly through the valley. Your guide adds context to the post towns, landscape and old road as the day unfolds.

Choose the departure point that suits your journey: Nagano Station, Hotel Kokusai 21 in Nagano, or Matsumoto Station. Please arrive with enough time to locate the stated meeting point before the scheduled departure.
At Matsumoto Station, meet at the West Exit by the taxi stand. At Nagano Station, meet inside by the information board opposite the Shinkansen gates; the hotel meeting point is at the entrance.
