Explore one of Iceland’s most distinctive highland regions on a full-day Super Jeep journey that combines volcanic landscapes, geothermal bathing and short, optional walks. This experience focuses on access, variety and local knowledge, with time to explore rather than rush.
The day begins with a Super Jeep drive into the Icelandic Highlands, travelling through the Fjallabak region where coloured rhyolite mountains, lava fields and clear rivers define the landscape. One of the first major stops is Ljótipollur crater lake, known for its turquoise water and red volcanic slopes, offering time to walk the rim and take in the scale of the crater.
On arrival in Landmannalaugar, you’ll have time to explore the area at a relaxed pace. Options typically include a short guided walk across lava fields and geothermal ground, or time to bathe in the natural hot spring set beside the lava. The bathing area is informal and natural, with no changing facilities beyond basic outdoor areas, so preparation is important.
Later in the day, the route continues towards Hekla, one of Iceland’s most active volcanoes. When conditions allow, the Super Jeep climbs partway up the mountain, reaching higher ground where views open out across the surrounding highlands. In clear weather, distant glaciers and wide volcanic plains are visible before the return journey.
Landmannalaugar lies in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, deep in Iceland’s interior and accessible only by highland routes. The region is known for its colourful mountains, geothermal features and extensive lava fields, making it one of the most varied landscapes in the country.
The meeting point is the highland bus stop in Hella, located on Suðurlandsvegur (Route 1). Departure is at 10:00 from the Hella bus stop. Access to Landmannalaugar is by Super Jeep only, allowing travel on routes not suitable for standard vehicles.
No previous highland or off-road experience is required. Participants should be comfortable spending a full day outdoors and walking short distances on uneven ground.
This tour is suitable for most people in fair general condition. Weather in the highlands can change quickly, so appropriate clothing and footwear are essential.
Running Super Jeep tours into the highlands requires route knowledge, flexibility and experience with rapidly changing conditions. Trips are adapted on the day to suit weather, road access and group needs, rather than following a fixed script.
Guides are locals with strong knowledge of the highlands and volcanic regions, many with experience operating in remote environments. This ensures a steady, well-managed day that balances access, safety and time spent exploring key locations.
