What to Expect
The session begins with a short talk covering essential open water swimming knowledge, including safety, legal considerations, and key differences from pool swimming. You'll then enter the water for an initial 350m shoreline swim, helping you adjust to the temperature and giving the coach a chance to assess your technique.
Once everyone is comfortable, further coaching will focus on open water skills such as sighting, stroke adaptation, and dealing with weather conditions. The final distance swum will be based on individual comfort levels, ensuring a positive and safe experience. Throughout the session, Neil will provide guidance and support, with kayak safety cover always in place.

Derwentwater, one of the most scenic lakes in the Lake District, offers an ideal setting for open water swimming. Sheltered bays and clear waters provide a safe environment for learning, while the surrounding fells create a truly special atmosphere.
The lake is easily accessible, with nearby parking and changing facilities available.
Prerequisites
Participants must be able to swim 400m continuously in a pool before taking part. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended, as open water swimming requires different skills compared to pool swimming.
Wetsuits are advisable for warmth and buoyancy, though not mandatory.
