Reaching the next stage of surfing requires more than simply standing up on a board. This Intermediate Surf Programme is designed for surfers who are ready to move beyond whitewater waves and begin surfing confidently at the peak while developing stronger decision-making and ocean awareness.
Moving away from beginner surfing, this programme focuses on helping you become more comfortable beyond the foam and closer to where waves begin to break. The course starts by improving your understanding of currents, positioning and movement in the lineup, allowing you to navigate the water more confidently and efficiently.
Throughout the two surf sessions, you'll work on paddling technique, wave selection and how to position yourself correctly at the peak. Instructors will help you understand priority rules, anticipate incoming sets and improve your ability to identify which waves offer the best opportunities for your level. Particular attention is given to developing an angled take-off, helping you ride across the wave face rather than heading straight towards the beach.
Alongside practical coaching, the programme includes video recording and analysis sessions. Watching your surfing back allows you to identify technical weaknesses, improve posture and receive personalised corrections. You'll also explore wave forecasting, warm-up routines and techniques such as duck diving or eskimo rolls to help you pass through breaking waves more efficiently.
Stretching for approximately 7 kilometres along the Cantabrian coastline, Somo Beach provides a fantastic environment for intermediate surfers looking to progress beyond basic wave riding. Its variety of wave conditions allows instructors to select suitable areas for skill development throughout the course.
Surrounded by a strong local surf culture, the area offers excellent opportunities to observe experienced surfers and gain a deeper understanding of how different conditions affect the waves. This combination of space, consistency and variety makes Somo particularly well suited to intermediate progression.
Previous surfing experience is required for this programme. Students should already be comfortable paddling, catching beginner waves and standing consistently on the board.
Confidence swimming in open water is essential, as the course focuses on moving further into the lineup and operating more independently in changing sea conditions.
Drawing on years of coaching experience, Andrea and the team focus on helping surfers bridge the gap between beginner and independent surfing. The programme combines technical instruction, ocean knowledge and practical experience to create a clear pathway towards more confident surfing.
Small coaching groups allow instructors to provide individual feedback while maintaining a supportive learning environment. Combined with video analysis and structured progression, this helps students identify improvements more quickly and build lasting confidence in the water.
This programme is aimed at surfers who have already completed beginner lessons and can consistently stand up and ride basic waves. It is intended for those looking to move beyond whitewater surfing and begin operating more confidently at the peak.
The coaching focuses on bridging the gap between beginner and independent surfing, helping students make better decisions and improve their understanding of the ocean.
Surfing at the peak refers to positioning yourself where waves begin to break rather than catching already-broken whitewater closer to shore.
Learning to surf from the peak gives you access to better quality waves and greater opportunities for progression, but it also requires improved positioning, wave reading and confidence.
An angled take-off allows you to enter the wave already facing along the wave rather than directly towards the beach.
This is a key intermediate skill because it helps you maintain speed, stay on the open face of the wave and prepare for future manoeuvres as your surfing progresses.
Yes. Understanding the sea is a major part of the programme. You'll learn how to identify currents, recognise wave patterns and anticipate incoming sets.
Developing these skills helps improve safety while also increasing the number of quality waves you catch during each session.
These are techniques used to pass through breaking waves when paddling out towards the peak.
Learning how and when to use them helps conserve energy, improve efficiency and reduce the frustration of being pushed backwards by incoming waves.
Your surfing will be recorded during the sessions and reviewed afterwards with your instructor.
Watching yourself surf makes it much easier to identify technical errors, improve body position and understand which adjustments will have the greatest impact on your progression.
No. A suitable surfboard and wetsuit are provided as part of the programme.
Equipment is selected according to your level and the conditions, helping create the best possible learning environment.
