On a private ice track outside Rovaniemi you take the wheel of a rally prepared BMW 325, with an instructor beside you while you learn how the car moves on frozen snow. The outing starts with a calm briefing and kit-up, then builds from steady practice laps into a full hour on the ice, or a longer 2.5 hour session if you want more time. Hotel pickup and drop-off sit within 10 kilometres of the city centre, and the longer option finishes with local food and drinks by the campfire.
After the run out from town, you pull on a helmet, balaclava and gloves and walk around the car so the roll cage, racing seats and spiked tyres make sense before you leave the start. The instructor covers braking, cornering, traction and how you talk to each other, then the first laps stay calm: straight line braking, turning in, feeding the throttle, and catching a basic slide. Feedback comes from the passenger seat or over the radio, and the aim is a soft, early style that works better on ice than a heavy right foot.
Once those laps feel natural you build the pace across the rest of your track time. The one hour session includes this practice inside the hour. On the longer option you stay out for 2.5 hours, which gives you room to repeat corners and settle into the slide, then sit by the fire for local food and drinks. When you know the circuit you can also take some laps on your own, still on the private ice and still with the team on hand at the side of the track.
The circuit sits on private ice in the countryside around Rovaniemi, well away from public roads and town traffic. You reach it with us from the city, so you do not need to find the track yourself or drive there in your own car.
Pickup and drop-off run within 10 kilometres of Rovaniemi city centre. Be ready five minutes before the time we send you, and share your hotel or cabin address so we can plan the run out to the ice.
Drivers need to be at least 18, and you will sign a liability release form before you get into the car. No previous rally or ice driving experience is required. We treat this as a first session and keep the early laps at a pace you can follow.
You should be comfortable taking the wheel and spending a few hours outdoors in Finnish winter weather. Bring your own warm layers, hat and winter boots. We supply the helmet, balaclava and gloves that you wear in the car.
Finnish guides have been looking after visitors in this part of Lapland since 1979, now in a third generation of the same family. The outing stays with your own group on a private circuit rather than a shared public lake, and the coaching is built around control on ice rather than a scare.
You drive a BMW 325 prepared for winter, with a safety roll cage, special seats and spiked rally tyres. Choose a one hour track session or the longer 2.5 hour option with food and drinks by the fire when you want more time behind the wheel.
We collect you from your stay in Rovaniemi and drive out to the private ice track. On arrival we fit your helmet, balaclava and gloves, then walk around the BMW 325 so you can see the roll cage, the seats and the spiked tyres. Your instructor covers braking, cornering, traction and how we talk to each other, and you sign the liability release before anyone turns a wheel. The briefing usually takes around 20 minutes, or 20 to 30 minutes on the longer session.
You start with quiet laps so you can feel the car settle. We practise braking in a straight line, turning in and out of a curve, feeding the throttle, and catching a basic slide before the pace comes up. Your instructor gives feedback from the passenger seat or over the radio, and we keep this block slow on purpose. The aim is a soft, early style that works better on ice than a heavy right foot.
When the first laps feel natural, you build the pace across the rest of your track time. The one hour session includes this practice inside the hour, so you are learning and driving in the same block. Once you know the circuit you can also take some laps on your own, still on the private ice and still with us on hand at the side of the track.
If you choose the longer option you stay out for 2.5 hours of track time, which gives you more room to repeat corners and settle into the slide. When you come off the ice we sit by the campfire for local food and drinks before the drive back to Rovaniemi. The whole outing is about five hours door to door, including the briefing and the run to the track.
You do not need any rally background to take the wheel. We start beside the track with a calm briefing, fit your helmet and balaclava, and walk through how the car behaves on ice before you leave the start. Your instructor stays with you, first from the passenger seat or by radio, and we keep the opening laps slow so you can feel the grip.
Once those first laps feel natural, we build the pace together. The aim is a soft, early style of driving rather than a heavy right foot, and you will have time to practise braking, turning in, and catching a slide before you push on.
This is a driving session rather than a long hike, so you do not need a high level of fitness. You should be comfortable sitting in a rally seat with a harness, turning the wheel for an hour or more, and spending time outdoors between laps in Finnish winter weather.
If you get cold easily, dress in warm layers you can add or remove, and wear proper winter boots for the walk from the van to the car. We can pause between stints so you can warm your hands and take a breath before the next run.
Drivers need to be at least 18. That is a hard limit on this experience, so we cannot put a younger guest behind the wheel even if they have driven on the road at home.
Please come only as adults who will actually drive. A shared session for several drivers on the same ice is set up for three to six people, rather than this one driver outing.
Wear warm layers you already own, a hat that fits under a helmet, and winter boots with a decent sole. We give you a helmet, a balaclava and gloves for the time you are in the car, so you do not need to pack motorsport kit of your own.
Leave jewellery and loose scarves in your bag, and bring sunglasses or clear glasses if you wear them for driving. A small dry bag for your phone is useful. Have your hotel or cabin address ready so we can plan pickup.
Every car has a roll cage, special seats and spiked rally tyres, and you wear a helmet and balaclava for the session. Before you drive you will sign a liability release form. Your instructor covers braking, cornering and how we talk to each other on the ice, and the first laps stay at a pace you can follow.
Personal liability applies, and the figure differs between the one hour options. We will confirm which applies to the session you choose before you get on the ice. Minor damage is looked at case by case.
The one hour track session usually fills about four hours door to door, including pickup, a briefing of around 20 minutes, and the drive back. That hour on the ice includes your practice laps, so you are not spending the whole time at full pace from the first corner.
If you want more time behind the wheel, choose the longer option. That one gives you 2.5 hours of track time, a briefing of around 20 to 30 minutes, and a total outing of about five hours, with local food and drinks by the campfire at the end.
The session needs a sound ice surface, so we watch the temperature and the state of the track before we set out. Soft ice, heavy snowfall or a sudden thaw can mean we have to move your time or stop the day for safety.
If we cannot run, we will be in touch as early as we can with the next step. Please treat this as a winter activity that depends on the lake staying hard enough for cars, not as an indoor session that runs in any weather.
Most guests feel a little tight in the shoulders on the first lap, and that is normal. We start with straight line braking and slow corners so you can feel how the car settles, and your instructor can talk you through each input from the passenger seat or over the radio.
You are not expected to drive at a competition pace. The goal is control and a bit of slide you chose, not a scare. Tell us if you want to stay slower for longer, and we will keep the session at that pace until you are ready to add speed.
Pickup and drop-off are included if your hotel or cabin sits within 10 kilometres of Rovaniemi city centre. Share the address in advance, and please be ready five minutes before the time we send you so the run out to the track stays on schedule.
Stays outside that radius are not part of this outing. If you are coming from further out, you will need to make your own way to a pickup we can reach, or travel into Rovaniemi first. We pin the activity to the city rather than to our office street, because we come to you.
Local food and drinks by the campfire are included on the longer 2.5 hour track session. The one hour options are about the briefing and the driving, so plan a meal before or after if you choose those.
Once you have learned the circuit with your instructor, you can drive some laps on your own. That comes after the coached practice, not at the very start, so you already know the braking points and how the car talks to you on the ice.
