Floating on a cut hole in the ice is quieter than it sounds. An insulated suit lets you lie back and look at the winter sky without feeling the lake the way you would in a swimming costume, then you change into warm clothes again for the ride toward town.
A van ride from town takes you to the lake while you stay in your own warm clothes. On arrival you change into a buoyant, waterproof suit and hear how to sit at the edge, lie back, and come out without rushing. Nobody enters until that briefing is finished, because the opening looks smaller once you are next to it and questions are easier on the ice than in the water.
The float itself is still and short enough that the cold stays interesting rather than grim. Face and any gap at the wrists can still feel the air, while the suit holds the rest of you on the surface. When the guide calls you in, you use the same calm steps in reverse, then change back into the warm layers you brought and travel toward town.
Frozen lakes sit a short transfer from Rovaniemi, hard enough in winter for a cut opening and a quiet horizon of snow and trees. On a clear night the sky can steal the show. Daylight floats are about the ice and the silence, with the same suit and the same calm entry either way.
The site is not a remote expedition, which keeps the experience focused on the water rather than a long approach. You are not hunting a lakeside car park on your own. The transfer is part of the three-hour window, and the lake stop is the reason for the outing.
No swimming skill is required, because the suit is built to keep you on the surface. You should be happy putting your face toward open winter water and following the guide's entry steps, which are about balance on ice rather than swim fitness.
Guests need to be at least 140 cm tall to float, as the suit and the opening are sized around that height. Shorter children can still come along but will not go in the water. Wear warm clothes for the transfer and for the time after you leave the suit, because the after-chill is real if you only brought a thin layer.
Cold-water sessions sit alongside safari work that started in 2005, with buoyancy first and then a calm entry. Guides keep the group small enough that nobody is rushed at the ice edge, and they stay with you for the sit-down and the stand-up as well as the float itself.
Pickup is arranged from listed points so you are not hunting a lakeside car park in the dark. The float stays the main event rather than a long add-on to another safari, which is why the outing is built around kit, briefing, water and getting warm again.
Pickup is offered from the hotels and meeting points listed for this session, including Santa Claus Village, selected Ounasvaara hotels, SantaSport, Postmaster Hotel, and the town office at Pirkkakatu 2. The team confirms your collection point and time so you know when to be ready in town clothes.
Bring warm clothes for the van and for after you leave the suit. The float kit is at the lake, not something you wear from the hotel, and a dry layer for the return journey makes the after-chill much easier.
No. The suit is built to keep you on the surface. You lie back and float rather than swimming laps in the opening.
You still need to follow the guide when you sit down at the edge and when you stand up again. That is about balance on ice, not about swim fitness.
To float you need to be at least 140 cm. The suit and the opening in the ice are sized around that height so you can lie back safely.
Shorter children can join the outing but will not go in the water. Share heights with the team beforehand so expectations are clear.
The whole outing is about 3 hours including transfer and changing. Time in the water is shorter than the full window and is paced so you stay comfortable.
Your confirmation shows the live start. Evening dates may line up with darker skies; daytime dates are about the ice and the quiet.
The suit is waterproof and insulated, so you should not feel the lake the way you would in a swimming costume. Face and any gap at the wrists can still feel the air.
Warm clothes for the van matter. Once you are out of the suit the after-chill is real if you only brought a t-shirt.
Listed hotels and meeting points in Rovaniemi, or the office on Pirkkakatu 2. The team confirms pickup point and time.
Be ready in warm town clothes. You change into the float suit at the lake, not in the hotel.
Ask the guide on the day about glasses straps. Phones do not belong in the water; leave them with dry kit or in a pocket on the bank if the guide agrees.
If you want a photo, say so before you enter so someone on the bank can take it. Do not plan to hold a camera in the opening.
Wind and snowfall can make the lake edge unpleasant even if the ice is sound. The guide may shorten time in the water or change the plan.
If the session cannot run safely, the team will contact you to reschedule. Keep your stay number to hand.
No meal is included with this session. Eat before pickup if you want something substantial, because the lake stop is about the float rather than a picnic.
The focus is the water and getting warm again. A hotel breakfast or an early dinner around the session works better than expecting food on the ice.
You stay in a full suit and float rather than dipping in a swimsuit. It is calmer and less of a shock, which is the point of this outing.
If you want a traditional ice swim, this is not that product. Ask the team if you are looking for a different kind of cold-water session.
Heights for anyone hoping to float, a phone number for pickup, and any worry about cold or enclosed suits. Those details help the guide plan the opening.
If someone is coming only to watch, say so. That helps them plan space at the ice without delaying people who are going in.
Sobre el centro
Rovaniemi
We have been sharing winter days around Rovaniemi since 2005, first with local teams and friends and now with travellers who want a real feel of life above the Arctic Circle. The work is still rooted in the same thing: small groups, Lappish hospitality, and time outdoors in the last wilderness of Europe.
Guides here grew up with this landscape. Days are built around snowmobile trails, campfire meals from local kitchens, and the quiet of the forest after the city lights fade. We take you into everyday Arctic life, not a staged version of it, and we look after the places we visit so the next generation can enjoy the same snow, silence, and night sky.
