A guided horseback ride on jungle paths, with help into the saddle before you leave the yard, including if you have never been on a horse. The guide sets the pace and the space between horses. We pick you up and bring you back once the horses are in.
Pickup, then the yard, then someone helping with the saddle while you are still on the ground, which is where first-timers want that help. The guide sets the pace on the jungle paths and asks you to keep the gap they set, and the ride is calmer for it.
You come back to the same yard to get off, with the same help you had at the start, so you are not finishing at a different ranch and inventing a way to the van. The transfer takes you back once the horses are in.
The paths are inland from the Cancún coast, on a ranch, away from the beach and into the trees. The yard is where you get on, and the trail stays on the ranch tracks for the whole ride.
Shade and open sections swap under the canopy. The guide rides at the front and stops where the group can hear the next word before the path changes, instead of shouting it over a trot.
You will need to be at least 4 years old. The ride is warm, so sun cream, a hat and water before you leave the van, and long trousers if you have them, will make the saddle much kinder.
You should be able to get on with help and sit the ride. If you have not ridden, say so while the saddle is going on, and the guide can match the horse before the line moves.
Saddling is done with staff at the yard, and the reins and the spacing are explained before the horses move. The guide rides with you at one pace, and the gap between horses is the main thing they will ask you to hold, because it keeps a narrow path relaxed.
You are matched to a horse for the trail ahead. If a horse or a section of path is not suitable, they say so before you leave the yard, and if a match is wrong once you are up, they swap it there rather than sorting it out on the trail.
Hotel lobby pickup applies on routes that include transport; be ready at the stated departure time with photo ID for children if parks require it.
Self drivers receive meeting point coordinates and parking notes from the operator ahead of the activity date.
Wear long trousers and closed shoes, and bring a hat and sun cream. Loose scarves and dangling jewellery get in the way once you are in the saddle.
A light rain layer is useful if a shower passes through. The yard is where you will want a bottle of water before the trail starts.
You should come ready for a guided horseback ride. Most of the time is outside, so the heat is as much a part of the day as the activity itself.
Take water when you need it, and tell the guide at the start if you want a slower place in the group. That is much easier than trying to catch them once everyone is already moving.
A meal is not part of this visit, so eat beforehand and bring water with you. A snack in your bag is useful if you get hungry between stops.
Bring more water than you expect to drink if you are out over the middle of the day. A hat makes the sunny stretches much easier.
Light rain does not usually stop the visit, but lightning or a track that is too soft can change the route. The guide decides that on the day and tells you before you set off.
If a section is shortened, they explain the new plan at the briefing, before you are on the trail. You will hear it with the group, not halfway along.
Anyone taking part needs to be at least 4 years old, and children need an adult with them. The guide will say before a section starts if it is not suitable for someone in your group.
They need to be able to listen to the safety talk and stay with the group. The same briefing applies to adults and to children.
You do not need to have done this before. The guide explains how it works, and what they need from you, before the group sets off.
If it is your first time, say so during that briefing. It is easier to ask while everyone is still together than once you are underway.
You can bring a phone or a camera if it is secure and you can spare a hand. Ask the crew before you attach anything to a helmet, a harness or a handlebar.
If someone is taking photos for the group that day, the crew will say so when you arrive. They will also tell you where to collect them afterwards.
If a ruin, a reserve or a beach asks for a local payment, the guide explains it before you get to the entrance. It helps to have a little cash with you in case that happens.
Tips for the crew are your own choice at the end of the day. The guide is the person to ask if you are not sure what a site is asking for.
Bring a dry bag for a phone and anything else you want to keep dry. Ask the crew when you arrive if there is somewhere to change and leave a bag.
Put your name on anything you set down. The group moves between stops, and bags are easy to mix up.
A phone in a waterproof pouch is the simplest option on a boat or in the water. Ask the crew before you strap a camera to a helmet or a machine.
Drones and flash are often not allowed near wildlife or at the ruins. Follow what the guide and the site ask on the day.
