Sail from Playa Santa Fe in a small group, snorkel the Tulum barrier reef, then swim the hidden freshwater cove at Caleta Tankah on one half-day route that pairs open reef time with a sheltered cove away from high-volume tour boats. Your guide leads both water stops with equipment ready before each entry, personalised attention on deck and in the water, and an unhurried pace so you can enjoy two distinct sides of the Tulum coastline without feeling rushed between snorkels.
After check-in at Playa Santa Fe, you board a small private boat, pick up your snorkel gear, and hear a short briefing on deck before the captain sails along the coast with views of the Tulum ruins from the water. At the first stop your guide anchors at the barrier reef, explains reef-safe entry technique, and leads a structured snorkel over coral heads and tropical fish, staying with the group throughout the swim and choosing entry points that suit the day's visibility and sea state.
The second stop takes you into Caleta Tankah, a sheltered cove where freshwater channels meet the Caribbean and the water often feels calmer than the open reef. Your guide keeps the group together for a relaxed swim here, with briefings on protecting the fragile mix of habitats before anyone enters the cove, then the boat turns south for the return sail along the jungle-backed shoreline to Playa Santa Fe, with time on deck between stops to adjust gear and take in the coastal views.
Tulum's coastline pairs cliff-top Mayan ruins with fringing reef, white sand, and quiet coves to the north toward Tankah. Playa Santa Fe works well as a launch point for small boats heading to the reef line and hidden coastal inlets that larger craft cannot reach comfortably.
The setting sits on the Riviera Maya between dense jungle and the Caribbean Sea, with easy links from Tulum town, the hotel zone, and day-trip routes from Playa del Carmen. Many guests combine the boat snorkel with ruins visits, cenote swims, or beach time elsewhere on the same coast.
No snorkelling qualification is needed for this guided boat trip. Basic swimming comfort helps at the reef stop, and your guide stays with the group in the water while life jackets remain available on board for anyone who wants extra support.
Mention any seasickness concerns or non-snorkellers in your party at check-in so seating and pacing can be planned for a comfortable sail and two relaxed water entries.
Small groups replace crowded tour boats, giving you personalised attention on deck and in the water at both snorkel stops. The route pairs open reef for classic Caribbean fish and coral with Caleta Tankah for a quieter cove experience many visitors never reach on standard tours.
Reef-safe gear handling and pre-entry briefings reflect an eco-conscious approach to fragile coastal habitats. That balance of access and care is central to how we guide this stretch of the Riviera Maya shoreline.
Check in at Playa Santa Fe, pick up your snorkel gear, and board the small private boat with the rest of your group. The captain outlines the coastal route while your guide explains how the reef and Caleta Tankah stops fit together across the morning or afternoon.
Seating and life jackets are arranged before departure so everyone is comfortable for the sail and ready for the first water entry without delay once you reach the reef.
Sail north along the coast with views of the Tulum ruins on the clifftop, including El Castillo above the reef line. The perspective from the water feels quieter than the busy archaeological zone ashore and frames the jungle, ruins, and sea in one continuous panorama.
Your guide highlights photo moments when light and sea state allow, while keeping the group briefed on the upcoming reef snorkel and what to expect at the entry point.
Anchor at the barrier reef for a guided snorkel over coral heads and tropical fish. Entry points are chosen for visibility and comfort on the day, and the guide stays with the group throughout the swim.
Expect a slow, observant pace rather than a rushed circuit, with time to watch parrotfish, sergeant majors, and coral formations while keeping a respectful distance from the reef structure.
Continue to Caleta Tankah, a hidden cove where freshwater channels blend with the Caribbean. Swim in calm, clear water away from standard tourist routes, with your guide leading a relaxed exploration of this sheltered sanctuary.
Time here focuses on unhurried swimming and appreciation of the cove's unique mix of habitats before the boat turns south for the return sail to Playa Santa Fe.
Your trip begins at Playa Santa Fe, where you check in, pick up your snorkel gear, and board a small private boat with a capped group size. That intimate scale replaces the crowded tour craft that often pack the Tulum coastline during peak season.
After a short safety briefing on deck, the captain sets off along the scenic coast toward the first snorkel stop, with your guide outlining the reef and cove sections of the route as you sail.
We prepare your mask, snorkel, and fins before you board or on the beach, and help you get a comfortable fit before each stop. Your guide also explains how to enter the water calmly so the group stays together over the reef.
Equipment is handled with reef-safe care between stops, and you can ask for adjustments at any point if you want a clearer mask seal or more comfortable fins.
Meet at Playa Santa Fe in Tulum at your booked departure time. The beach launch is easy to reach from Tulum town or the hotel zone, with space to check in before walking to the boat.
Arrive a little early so we can fit your gear and board together without rushing the departure along the coast.
Allow about two and a half hours for the full experience, including boarding, a coastal sail, the barrier-reef snorkel, and time at Caleta Tankah. You'll enjoy a half-morning or half-afternoon on the water rather than a full-day marathon.
Exact timing can shift slightly with sea conditions, but you'll always get open reef time and the quieter cove stop so you see two distinct sides of the Tulum coastline in one trip.
The first water stop targets the fringing barrier reef, where colourful fish, coral formations, and clear Caribbean water create a classic Riviera Maya snorkel scene when visibility is good. Your guide chooses entry points that suit the group and the day's conditions.
Expect to move slowly over the reef as a group, with the guide highlighting interesting species and keeping everyone within a comfortable swimming area rather than chasing distant wildlife.
Caleta Tankah is a sheltered coastal cove north of Tulum where freshwater channels meet the sea, creating calm, unusually clear water away from the busiest tourist routes. It feels like a hidden sanctuary compared with the open reef sections of the trip.
Your guide leads a relaxed swim here after the reef stop, with briefings on protecting the fragile mix of fresh and salt water habitats before anyone enters the cove.
From the boat you gain a rare perspective of the Tulum archaeological site on the clifftop, with El Castillo rising above the reef line as you sail along the coast. It is a quieter angle than the busy shore visit, with the ruins framed by Caribbean blue.
Photo moments depend on light and sea state, but the sail itself is part of the experience, linking Mayan history, jungle coastline, and open water in a single continuous view.
Families, couples, and small friend groups all fit the intimate boat format, and guides adapt the pace at each snorkel stop so mixed abilities can enjoy the reef and cove sections. The second stop at Tankah is particularly calm compared with open-water reef swimming.
Non-swimmers can stay on board with life jackets nearby, while confident snorkellers explore more widely with the guide keeping the group within a comfortable range.
Wear swimwear, bring a towel, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and sandals for the beach launch. A dry bag helps protect phone and keys on the boat, and a light cover-up is useful for the return sail.
Polarised sunglasses make the coastal views easier on bright days, and a reusable water bottle is handy for the interval between snorkel stops.
Most guests reach Playa Santa Fe by taxi, bicycle, or rental car from Tulum town or the coastal hotel strip. The meeting point sits on the beach side of the route toward Tankah, with local drivers familiar with Santa Fe as a boat launch.
Allow a few extra minutes in high season for parking or drop-off near the beach, then follow the check-in signs to the boat at Playa Santa Fe.
