Climb into Hakuba Valley for one of the Northern Japan Alps' most photogenic alpine ponds. A guided day from Nagano combines gondola and chairlift access with a moderate mountain walk to Happo-ike, where still water mirrors the peaks around you.
Meet at Nagano Station and travel towards Hakuba with a comfort stop to pick up lunch supplies. On arrival, ride a gondola and two chairlifts to the trailhead, then set out with your guide towards Happo-ike pond.
Reach the pond for a restful hour to eat, take photos and enjoy the mountain setting before descending by the same route. The afternoon continues with a temple visit and free time in Omachi-onsenkyo before returning to Nagano.
Hakuba Valley sits among the Northern Japan Alps, known for deep winter snow and summer hiking on high ridges. Happo-ike is one of the valley's signature viewpoints, where alpine water and peaks meet in a compact, memorable scene.
Reisho-ji Temple and nearby Omachi-onsenkyo add cultural contrast after the hike, giving the day a mix of trail time, heritage and relaxed onsen-town wandering.
This is a moderate mountain walk rather than a technical climb, but you should be comfortable hiking at altitude with changing weather. Supportive footwear and a reasonable fitness level matter more than specialist mountaineering skills.
Bring lunch, water and warm layers. Lift access helps reach the trail, but the walk itself still includes uneven ground and elevation.
Lift tickets, transfers and guiding are organised as one day from Nagano Station, which keeps a fairly complex alpine outing straightforward for visitors.
Your guide sets the pace on the trail and helps you make the most of the pond, temple and onsen town stops without rushing the mountain section.
Meet inside JR Nagano Station at 08:15 in front of the large Information Board directly across from the Shinkansen ticket gates. Look for your English-speaking guide there.
Arrive a few minutes early so the group can leave on time for Hakuba. The day ends back at Nagano Station in the evening.
