Challenge yourself on a half day guided hike across Dartmoor National Park. Mostly starting from North Dartmoor, but this can be changed per group as required.
Dartmoor National Park is located in the South West of England and known for its wide expanses of open moorland, granite tors and ancient archaeology. giving you the chance to see contrasting landscapes while walking through areas rich in local legend and natural beauty.
The terrain is wild and varied, often involving unmarked tracks, exposed ridges and areas far from roads or settlements. Expect to encounter fast-changing weather, livestock, and large stretches of open ground.
walks take place on remote sections of the moor, making good fitness and preparation essential.
Participants must be at least 12 years old and should have a good level of physical fitness, with experience of walking in remote, upland environments.
You’ll need sturdy walking boots, appropriate outdoor clothing, and enough food and water to last the day. These hikes are not suitable for beginners or casual walkers.
The hikes are led by Rob, a Dartmoor-based guide with over 30 years of personal experience walking, climbing and exploring the moor. With a background that includes challenging events like Ten Tors and the Dartmoor Classic, he brings deep local knowledge and practical skill to every trip.
Keeping group sizes small means you’ll get expert guidance throughout, with plenty of chances to ask questions and enjoy the less-visited corners of Dartmoor.
Dartmoor is known for rapid changes in weather, so being prepared for all conditions is essential. A layered clothing system works best: wear a moisture-wicking base layer, insulating mid-layer, and a waterproof outer shell. Waterproof trousers and sturdy walking boots with good ankle support are also recommended. You’ll need a backpack big enough to carry spare clothing, food, water, and any personal items. Gloves, a warm hat, and sunscreen are useful year-round. A headtorch and personal first aid kit are optional but advised.
All safety equipment, such as group shelters and navigation tools, will be provided. If you're unsure about kit specifics, a short video guide is available to help you prepare for your day on the moors.
Weather is constantly monitored in the lead-up to any session. The route or location may be adjusted depending on the forecast — for example, avoiding exposed high ground during strong winds and opting for sheltered valleys instead.
If a yellow weather warning is issued, sessions usually go ahead with minor adjustments.
With an amber warning, we carry out a full risk assessment considering the activity type, location, and terrain conditions. You’ll be informed at least 24 hours in advance if any changes are needed.
In the event of a red weather warning, the course is cancelled entirely for safety reasons.
If we cancel due to weather, you will be offered either a full refund or the chance to rebook on a future date.
The terrain you’ll encounter depends on the specific course or walk you book. Dartmoor includes everything from easy, well-maintained footpaths to areas of open moorland, steep hills, boggy ground, and rocky sections. Each course listing includes a difficulty rating to help you decide if it suits your fitness and confidence level.
As a general guide, you should be comfortable walking for several hours across uneven ground. If you’re unsure, feel free to contact us before booking — we’ll be happy to help you choose something appropriate.
All activities are fully risk-assessed, and our instructors are highly experienced, qualified, and certified in outdoor first aid. They also hold DBS checks and relevant insurance.
We carry a range of emergency gear on all sessions, including group shelters, personal location beacons, spare layers, and medical kits. Safety is built into every part of the day, and we take a proactive approach to adapting sessions based on conditions and group needs.
Dogs are welcome on guided walks, as long as they are kept on a lead and under control, particularly near livestock.
Only one dog per participant is allowed.
Yes. We regularly work with individuals and groups who have additional needs and are happy to tailor our guided walks or navigation training to suit your ability. If you're unsure whether this session is right for you, get in touch and we’ll work with you to customise the experience.
We also offer private or group sessions throughout the year that are specifically adapted for less mobile participants.
We aim to begin and end sessions near public toilet facilities. However, once on the moor, there are no permanent facilities. Natural breaks are possible, and there are always discreet spots available if needed.
Please bring your own toilet paper and a bag to carry out any used items — leave no trace principles are important, especially in remote areas.
You’ll need to bring your own food and drink for the day. Think along the lines of a packed lunch with snacks such as fruit, sandwiches, and chocolate. There will be scheduled breaks, but we won’t have any way to heat food, so plan accordingly.
Bring at least one litre of water and consider a hot drink in a flask, especially during colder months.
All three hikes are physically demanding and best suited to experienced walkers with good overall fitness. Each route involves at least 500 metres of elevation gain and distances between 10 to 14 miles (16 to 23 km), with challenging underfoot conditions including rocky paths, uneven moorland, and steep climbs.
Yes, you can choose your preferred route at the time of booking: Haytor, Belstone or Princetown. Please use the booking form to select your hike.
