You will climb Normal de la Morcilla as a guided multi-pitch in the Valle de los Cahorros, a classic of six pitches and about 150 metres with a maximum of V+, opened by local climbers in the 1980s. The line mixes equipped sections with a bit of trad protection, and we take two climbers with a guide who knows the approach, the belays and the way down.
We meet at Era de los Portachuelos, walk about fifteen minutes along the river path to the hanging bridge, and start just to the right on the main wall. The first two pitches are equipped slabs of about twenty metres at V, then a short II+ step, a IV+ dihedral and crack that needs friends, a V athletic pitch of about thirty metres, and a V+ finish of about thirty metres with older pegs and medium friends.
On the summit we pause for photos looking into the gorge and towards the Sierra Nevada, then make a sixty-metre abseil, a short down-climb and another sixty-metre abseil to the dam by the big Cahorros bridge. The walk back to the cars is about fifteen minutes. The day is about five hours, and in summer we often start at nine so you are not in the hottest part of the gorge at midday.
Los Cahorros sits just above Monachil, a deep limestone gorge with hanging bridges and long walls. The route uses that rock for a full guided day only a short drive from Granada, and weekend walkers share some of the approach path.
We send the parking pin and a suggested arrival time in the days before, so we can use the conditions that week. An early start keeps the day calmer when the gorge is busy. Bring at least a litre of water, a snack and shoes that grip on the river path.
You should already lead or second confidently on outdoor rock, manage your own belay and talk clearly at stances. This is an intermediate day, not a first outdoor session, and you need the fitness to keep moving on ground around V and V+ for several hours.
You need to be 18 or over. Two climbers per guide keeps the ropework simple on a committing gorge line. We issue harness, helmet and shoes, look after the rack, and take digital photos when there is a safe stance for it.
On a long route the useful thing we bring is local knowledge: where to park, how the face feels in the sun, and a descent we have done many times. You climb. We handle the rack, the route finding and the faff, and we take digital photos and videos when there is a safe stance for it. Your guide is a mountain guide who specialises in rock climbing and can work in English or Spanish.
We only take two climbers per guide on these days, which keeps belays moving on committing ground. Before we leave the car we will talk through the pitches, the descent and the timing so you know what the day looks like, and we would rather move the date than force a tired day on wet rock or a windy high face.
