Surfing offers a fantastic way to connect with the ocean while building confidence, fitness and practical skills in the water. These small-group lessons are designed to support complete beginners and experienced surfers alike, with coaching tailored to individual ability and goals.
Your lesson begins at the meeting point in Somo, where you'll meet your instructor and be fitted with the appropriate surfboard and wetsuit. After a welcome briefing, the session starts on the beach with an introduction to ocean safety, surf etiquette and the fundamental techniques needed for the day's conditions. The instructors assess each student's experience level to ensure everyone receives coaching that matches their current ability.
Once the practical session begins, you'll work on essential surfing skills both on the sand and in the water. Beginners will focus on paddling, positioning, timing and learning how to stand up on the board, while more experienced surfers may work on improving wave selection, board control, turning techniques and overall efficiency. Throughout the lesson, instructors provide individual feedback to help accelerate progress and build confidence.
One of the biggest advantages of these sessions is the small instructor-to-student ratio. With no more than eight students per instructor, everyone receives plenty of attention and guidance. Somo's long sandy beach also allows instructors to move to the most suitable areas based on the conditions, helping create a safer and more productive learning environment.
Somo is widely recognised as one of northern Spain's leading surfing destinations. Its expansive sandy beach stretches for several kilometres along the Cantabrian coastline, providing excellent conditions for learning and improving throughout much of the year. The consistent waves and spacious beach make it particularly suitable for structured surf coaching.
The surrounding area offers a relaxed coastal atmosphere with cafés, restaurants and scenic walks overlooking Santander Bay. Visitors can enjoy a traditional seaside setting while benefiting from easy access to quality surf conditions, making Somo a popular choice for both first-time surfers and returning visitors looking to develop their skills.
Participants must be at least 6 years old and able to swim confidently. No previous surfing experience is required, as lessons are adapted to suit complete beginners through to more experienced surfers.
A reasonable level of comfort in the water is recommended. Instructors will provide guidance throughout the session and adjust coaching to match individual confidence and ability levels.
Andrea and the team believe that smaller groups create a better learning experience. By limiting class sizes, instructors can focus on each student's development, providing personalised feedback and adapting lessons to individual goals rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.
Years of coaching experience have helped shape a teaching methodology that works for all ages and abilities. Combined with a genuine passion for the sea, quality equipment and a supportive atmosphere, the result is an environment where students can learn, improve and enjoy their time in the water.
Yes. Many students attending these lessons have never surfed before. The coaching programme is designed to introduce new surfers to the sport in a structured and supportive way, starting with the basics before progressing into the water.
Your instructor will explain everything from how to carry and handle the board to paddling techniques, positioning and standing up safely. No previous experience is needed, and lessons are adapted to help you progress at a comfortable pace.
All essential surfing equipment is included. You'll be provided with a suitable surfboard and wetsuit selected according to your size, experience level and the day's conditions.
Using the correct equipment is an important part of learning to surf. The instructors carefully match equipment to each student to maximise comfort, safety and progression throughout the session.
Group lessons are limited to a maximum of eight students per instructor. This allows instructors to provide meaningful feedback and individual coaching throughout the lesson.
For bookings of one or two people, lessons are generally treated as private sessions. This provides an even more personalised experience and allows the lesson to focus entirely on your goals and development.
Yes. All participants must be able to swim confidently before joining a lesson.
Although sessions take place in carefully selected areas suitable for learning, surfing is an ocean-based activity and a basic level of swimming ability is essential for safety and enjoyment.
You'll need swimwear to wear underneath your wetsuit, a towel and comfortable clothing for before and after the lesson. During warmer months, sunscreen and drinking water are also recommended.
Many students also bring a change of clothes and footwear for after the session. Storage options may vary, so it is best to avoid bringing unnecessary valuables where possible.
