Step into Barranc de Biniaraix, one of Mallorca's finest gorges, on a shared hike through olive terraces, dry-stone walls and towering limestone above the Sóller valley. Ancient cobbled paths and optional stream sections create a medium-hard half-day with a certified guide and a small group of up to eight guests.
From Biniaraix village you enter the gorge on the historic Dry Stone Wall path, climbing beside terraces and rock walls while the valley drops away to the Sóller basin. Your guide sets a steady rhythm with a snack stop in a scenic pocket of the barranc and time to notice geology, flora and the craftsmanship of the dry-stone heritage.
After rain, water can flow in the gorge bed and the cobbles need extra care; in dry weather the stone glows warm in the sun. The shared group stays within eight guests plus the guide so narrow sections remain manageable and everyone hears safety tips on footing and pace.
Stone-built Biniaraix nestles on the edge of Sóller in the UNESCO Serra de Tramuntana, where gorge walking links village culture with dramatic mountain scenery. The trail connects the town to higher forest paths favoured by island hikers who want history and height in one outing.
The Sóller valley offers cafés, the vintage tram from Palma and straightforward road access. Paid parking at the meeting point works well in shoulder season but fills on busy weekends, so arriving a little early helps.
Participants aged 12 and over should hike with a responsible adult and need solid fitness for four to five hours on uneven cobbles with sustained ascent. Good balance and shoes with strong grip are essential on wet or polished stone.
This route is not an easy coastal stroll. If you are new to hiking, try an easier valley day first; if you want more exposure and scrambling, see the north-coast Mola routes in the same programme.
Certified mountain guides train on Tramuntana geology and seasonal conditions, so they know when to slow the group on slick cobbles or choose a slightly shorter loop in the barranc.
Electrolytes and poles are available when useful, and the guiding ethos emphasises mindful pacing rather than racing through one of Mallorca's most photographed gorges.
Meet your guide at the Biniaraix parking area on Camí de biniaraix. After a briefing and kit check, you enter the gorge on the ancient cobbled path above the village.
Walk the gorge with views of olive terraces, dry-stone walls and towering limestone. The guide adjusts pace for the group and pauses where the valley opens to the Tramuntana ridgelines.
Take a snack stop in a scenic spot before completing the loop or descent back towards Biniaraix, usually within four to five hours on the trail including breaks.
Meet at Camí de biniaraix, 7, Sóller, 07101, at the Biniaraix parking area (paid parking applies).
Arrive 10 minutes early. Your guide confirms the exact spot by message before the hike. The tram from Palma to Sóller connects easily if you are travelling without a car.
Plan for about four to five hours on the trail, covering roughly 8 km with more than 400 m of ascent on cobbled gorge paths.
Allow time for a snack stop and photos. Your guide sets the shared group pace on the day.
The grade is advanced or medium-hard: long sections of historic cobbles, steady climbing and some narrow gorge floor. Fitness and confident footing matter more than speed.
After wet weather, streams and slick stone need extra care. The guide may adjust the route if conditions are unsafe.
Minimum age is 12. Under-18s should hike with a responsible adult. The length and terrain suit active teenagers rather than young children.
Mention at the meeting point if anyone in your party is unsure about fitness for a medium-hard gorge day.
Shared departures run with up to eight guests plus your guide. That keeps the cobbled gorge comfortable and gives time for briefing on the trail.
The guide positions the group carefully on narrow sections so everyone can see foot placements on the stone.
Meet at Camí de biniaraix, 7, Sóller, postcode 07101, at the Biniaraix parking area. Paid parking applies at the lot.
Your guide confirms the exact spot when you arrive. There is no hotel pickup on this route.
Paid parking is available at the Biniaraix meeting point. Spaces can be tight on peak weekends, so arrive early or consider the tram to Sóller plus a short taxi.
Do not assume free street parking in the village during market days or summer peaks.
Bring at least 2 litres of water per person, snacks, sun cream, layers and shoes with excellent grip on wet stone. A daypack keeps your hands free on the cobbles.
Water and food are not supplied on the trail. The guide carries electrolytes and can lend poles.
Your certified mountain guide, electrolytes and hiking poles when needed are included for the shared departure.
Parking fees, transport to the meeting point, meals and personal insurance are not included.
Gorge conditions can change quickly after rain, with flowing water and slippery stone. If the route is unsafe, your guide may choose a shorter variant or postpone the technical sections.
Light cloud is often fine; follow your guide if the plan needs to shorten or turn back.
Look for birds of prey above the gorge, lizards on warm stone and seasonal wildflowers on the terraces in spring.
Stay on the path to protect the dry-stone walls and olive groves that define this protected landscape.
