This private full-day trek explores Romania’s highest mountain range, combining a scenic drive along the Transfăgărășan Road with challenging hiking above 2,000 metres. Routes are adapted to season and weather, offering access to classic alpine terrain with flexible summit options.
This day hike focuses on high-mountain terrain in the Făgăraș Mountains, with routes selected based on seasonal access and conditions. In summer and early autumn, the hike starts from Bâlea Lake, reached via the Transfăgărășan Road, one of Romania’s most significant mountain passes.
During winter and spring, when the road is closed, the hike moves to the Valea Sâmbetei area, offering demanding but safer alternatives at slightly lower altitude. In all cases, the itinerary prioritises safety, weather conditions, and participant ability.
The Făgăraș Mountains form the highest section of the Romanian Carpathians, with long alpine ridges, glacial lakes, and steep valleys. Summer routes centre around Bâlea Lake and the Transfăgărășan Road, while colder-season hikes take place in the Valea Sâmbetei area.
Both locations offer classic high-mountain scenery and demanding terrain, requiring good fitness and confident footing.
This tour requires very good physical fitness and prior hiking experience. Participants must be comfortable with steep ascents, rocky ground, and rapid changes in mountain weather.
Waterproof hiking boots and weather-appropriate clothing are compulsory. The route may be changed on the day to ensure safety.
Waterproof hiking boots and waterproof outer layers are essential. Warm clothing should be carried even in summer due to altitude.
Bring a daypack, water, snacks, sun protection, personal medication, and any personal items you may need during a long day outdoors.
This experience is designed to maximise time on the mountain while remaining flexible to conditions. Private guiding allows the route, pace, and objectives to be adapted to your experience and the weather.
Long-standing knowledge of the Făgăraș Mountains ensures safe access to demanding terrain while maintaining a responsible, low-impact approach.
After an early departure from Brașov, you’ll drive towards the Făgăraș Mountains. When conditions allow, the route follows the Transfăgărășan Road to Bâlea Lake, with time to learn about the history and construction of this high-altitude pass.
From Bâlea Lake, the hike climbs towards Capra Lake through open alpine terrain. Depending on weather and group condition, the day may include an ascent of Vânătoarea lui Buteanu Peak (2,507 m) or a high-level circuit around the lake. Total hiking time is around 4–5 hours, with sustained climbs and rocky paths.
At the end of the hike, there is time to relax near Bâlea Lake, with the option to have lunch at the lake hotel (not included), before returning to Brașov in the evening.
