Clear water off Watamu is the setting for this morning: a hotel collection in town, a briefing at the marine office, then a boat to look for dolphins before you snorkel and eat at Sudi Island. The trip stays on this stretch of coast, not a dhow day further south.
Collected from a Watamu hotel around 07:30, you reach the Watamu Marine Association office by about 08:15 for a briefing with the tour leader. The boat leaves for the dolphin site around 08:30. Once you are on the water the crew scans the usual stretch outside the reef. Dolphins may travel with the boat or stay at a distance; they are not fed or herded. The ride itself is part of the morning, with the colour change over the shallows.
Later you continue to Sudi Island to snorkel in the shallows, spend time on the sand, and have lunch. Stay with the guide so you do not stand on coral. After the island you return to the office or your Watamu hotel. Pickup is for stays inside Watamu town; if you are based outside, ask the team before you travel. Sightings are wild animals, so nothing is promised.
Kenya's north coast holds Watamu, with a marine park just offshore and a chain of small islands and reefs. The briefing office is in town, a short ride from the beach hotels.
Sudi Island is the snorkel and lunch stop. The water is typically shallow and clear on a calm morning. You stay on this Watamu stretch rather than travelling south to Shimoni or Wasini.
Swimming and a small boat are the only real tests. You should be happy to snorkel in open water with a guide nearby. The minimum age is 12. No previous snorkel qualification is required.
If you are unsure in waves, or you have ear or sinus problems, say so at the briefing so the crew can keep you in easier water at the island. Infants cannot take a separate seat on the transfer.
Custom itineraries across Kenya and the wider region are how this team works, and the Watamu morning is built the same way: one briefing, one boat, one island stop. You leave from town rather than sitting through a long road transfer to another coastline.
Group size stays at ten or fewer, which keeps the boat manageable and the island stop unhurried. Guides work these waters daily and know when to move on if the first patch is quiet.
You are collected from your Watamu hotel around 07:30 and taken to the Watamu Marine Association office. The tour leader briefs the group at about 08:15, covering the boat, the search, and how to behave around marine life. This is the time to mention if you are new to snorkelling or prone to seasickness. You leave for the dolphin site around 08:30. Pickup is for hotels inside Watamu town.
Once you are on the boat the crew starts scanning the water along the usual stretch outside the reef. You may see dolphins travel with the boat or stay at a distance; they are not fed or herded. The ride itself is part of the morning, with the coastline and the colour change over the shallows. Keep sun cream on and sit where the skipper asks when the boat turns.
The boat continues to Sudi Island for snorkelling in the shallows and lunch. This is the longest stop: time in the water, a rest on the island, and a meal before you head back. Stay with the guide so you do not stand on coral. After the island you return to the office or your Watamu hotel. If you stay outside Watamu, arrange the meeting point with the team before you travel.
You are collected from your hotel in Watamu around 07:30 and taken to the Watamu Marine Association office for an 08:15 briefing. Be in the lobby on time so the boat slot stays intact.
Drop-off is back at the office or your Watamu hotel at the end of the morning. Pickup is only offered inside Watamu town. If you are staying outside Watamu, ask the team before you travel and plan to meet in town.
No. This trip is a Watamu morning: hotel pickup in town, a briefing at the marine office, a boat to look for dolphins, then snorkel and lunch at Sudi Island.
Older catalogue text sometimes mentions a dhow, mangroves, or caves further south. Pack for Watamu and Sudi Island, not a south-coast island day.
The crew looks along the usual stretch of water after you leave the office. Dolphins are wild and move with the fish, so a sighting is likely on many mornings and absent on others.
The snorkel and lunch at Sudi Island still run if the first search is quiet. Come for the boat and the reef, and treat dolphins as a bonus.
You should be able to swim and be happy with a snorkel in open water. The island stop is the main in-water part of the morning.
If you are new to snorkelling, say so at the 08:15 briefing. The crew can keep you in easier shallows. A short practice at the surface is enough for most people.
Travellers need to be at least 12. The boat and the snorkel stop are not set up for younger children on this product.
Infants on any road transfer must sit on laps. Confirm ages with the team before you travel so the boat count is right.
Pickup is from hotels inside Watamu town at about 07:30. The briefing is at the Watamu Marine Association office around 08:15, then the boat leaves about 08:30.
If you are staying outside Watamu, ask the team before you travel. You may need to reach the office yourself.
After the dolphin search you land at Sudi Island to snorkel, spend time in the shallows, and have lunch. This is the longest stop of the morning.
The water is usually sheltered compared with the open search. Follow the guide on where to fin so you stay off fragile coral.
The boat works as a guided snorkel stop, and basic kit is part of the morning when you do not bring your own. If you have a mask that fits you well, pack it.
Ask the team before you travel if you need a prescription mask or you prefer not to share kit. A rash vest helps if you burn easily.
The window is about four hours on the water, from the briefing through the island lunch and the return to town. Pickup at 07:30 sits just before that.
Sea conditions can stretch a search or shorten a stop. Keep the rest of the afternoon free rather than planning a tight lunch elsewhere.
Light chop is common and the boat still goes. If the morning is unsafe, the team may shift the start or be in touch about moving the day.
Pack a dry layer and take any seasickness tablets you usually use. Tell the skipper early if you feel unwell.
Some mornings include a short look at the coastal villages near the briefing, when time and the group allow. It is a light add-on, not a separate walking tour.
The core of the morning is the boat, the dolphin search, and Sudi Island. Do not plan the day around a long village circuit.
