This private full-day experience takes you from Quito into the heart of Cotopaxi National Park for a mix of biking and light hiking. The route follows open Andean landscapes shaped by volcanic activity, offering a varied day in one of Ecuador’s most recognisable regions. With private transport and a guide, the pace is flexible and suited to your comfort level.
The day begins with a drive south from Quito along the Panamericana Highway, gradually leaving the city behind as the Andes come into view. On arrival at Cotopaxi National Park, your guide will prepare you for the biking section, which takes place across wide dirt roads near the base of the volcano. The route covers around 16 miles and stays mostly flat, making it manageable while still giving a sense of distance and exploration.
As you cycle through the park, the scenery shifts between open plains, volcanic rock formations, and views of Cotopaxi itself. The landscape reflects past eruptions, with scattered lava stones and vast open terrain. There are stops along the way to take in the surroundings and adjust pace where needed.
After the cycling portion, the experience continues with time on foot within the national park. This allows you to explore different viewpoints and learn more about the area’s geology and environment. A lunch break is included before the return journey to Quito in the afternoon.
Cotopaxi National Park sits within Ecuador’s central Andes, forming part of the well-known Avenue of Volcanoes. The area is dominated by Cotopaxi, one of the highest active volcanoes in the world, whose symmetrical shape stands out across the surrounding highlands.
The park itself is made up of wide grasslands, volcanic terrain, and high-altitude ecosystems. Its proximity to Quito makes it a popular destination for day trips, yet it still feels open and remote once inside the reserve boundaries.
Participants should have a basic level of fitness due to the combination of altitude and physical activity. While the cycling route is mostly flat, the elevation can make exertion feel more demanding than at sea level.
No advanced cycling or hiking experience is required, but comfort on a bike is important. The guide will adapt the pace where possible, though the environment remains high altitude throughout the day.
The experience is designed as a private tour, allowing full flexibility with pace and timing throughout the day. With dedicated transport and guiding, the focus remains on comfort and adapting the route to suit individual preferences rather than following a fixed group schedule.
Care is taken to ensure the experience runs smoothly from hotel pickup to return. Working with experienced local guides means you gain insight into the landscape while also having support throughout the activity in a remote high-altitude environment.
