Walk deep into Wadi Rum on foot and feel the shift from narrow canyon walls to wide desert horizons. This five-hour hike mixes steady uphill sections with rewarding viewpoints, local stories, and time to photograph the sandstone landscape at a comfortable pace.
After a welcome drink and briefing at the meeting point, you set off on foot through sculpted canyons and open sand valleys. Your guide leads the route, pausing at viewpoints and sharing Bedouin history tied to the landscape. The pace allows regular breaks for water, photos, and rest in shaded spots.
You return to the meeting area before dark, with luggage storage and changing facilities available at the start if needed. The route is designed for walkers who want a full day on the trails without rope work or scrambling grades.
Wadi Rum Protected Area sits in southern Jordan, a UNESCO-listed desert of red sand, granite domes, and wind-carved rock. The canyons on this hike sit away from the main road, so foot travel gives you quiet trails and close views of Nabataean inscriptions and natural arches nearby.
Most visitors reach the protected area from Petra or Aqaba by road. The meeting point is inside the reserve near established camp facilities, so you can combine this hike with overnight desert stays or shorter jeep tours on other days.
You should be comfortable walking for several hours on uneven sand and rock with some uphill sections. No climbing experience is required. Bring sun protection and sturdy footwear; the guide sets a pace suited to the group.
Inform your guide at the briefing about knee, ankle, or mobility concerns so rest stops can be planned. Carry enough water for the full five hours, especially during warmer months.
Local Bedouin guides know seasonal trail conditions, water stops, and the safest lines through canyon narrows. Equipment needed for the hike is provided, and the fixed meeting point makes planning straightforward if you are already staying in the reserve.
The route balances effort and reward with regular viewpoint pauses, so you see both intimate canyon detail and wide desert scale in a single walking day without technical climbing.
Arrive at Hasan Group Parking Area and meet your Bedouin guide for the day. Store luggage at reception or use a tent space to change into walking kit while enjoying a complimentary welcome drink. The guide outlines the route, expected pace, and safety points before you leave on foot.
Set off through narrow canyon passages that open into wide sand valleys. The guide chooses the line based on conditions, pausing at viewpoints and Nabataean inscription sites. Expect a mix of shaded narrows and sunlit plains with regular stops for water and photographs.
Climb steady inclines toward high points that reveal the scale of the protected area. No technical climbing is involved, but uneven footing requires attention. From the tops you gain wide views across ridges and distant rock formations before descending on the return leg.
Complete the circular or out-and-back route back to the parking area before nightfall. Collect stored bags, freshen up if needed, and ask the team about onward travel or camp stays. Optional mint tea is often available as the group winds down after the walk.
The route is a full-day walk on sand, rock, and gentle inclines without technical climbing. If you regularly walk for two to three hours at home, you should manage the distance with the guide adjusting pace and rest stops.
Heat is the main challenge in summer, so start hydrated and carry extra water as advised on the day. Tell your guide about knee or ankle issues at the briefing so the group can plan breaks.
Closed-toe walking shoes or light hiking boots with good grip work best on sand and rocky sections. Sandals are not recommended because fine grit and uneven stone underfoot can cause slips.
Break in new boots before travel. Gaiters or long socks help keep sand out if you already use them for desert trekking.
Families with older children who enjoy long walks often join, though no official minimum age is set for this product. Younger children may find five hours on foot tiring in heat.
Contact the team in advance if you are unsure about pace or distance for your family. Private pacing can sometimes be discussed when group size allows.
Items required for the guided walking route are supplied so you do not need specialist desert kit beyond personal clothing. Your guide confirms anything specific on arrival based on season and trail conditions.
Personal items such as sun cream, hat, sunglasses, and a day pack remain your responsibility. A reusable water bottle is strongly recommended.
The standard meeting point is Hasan Group Parking Area inside Wadi Rum Protected Area near Ad Disah. Full address details are on the listing map.
Arrive a few minutes early to store luggage, change shoes if needed, and enjoy the welcome drink before the group departs on foot.
The protected area entrance fee is paid separately at the visitor centre or ranger station unless your selected rate already includes it. Keep your entrance ticket inside the reserve as rangers may check it.
Ask the team on arrival if you are unsure whether your rate covers the fee. Fees are set by the protected area authority, not the tour operator.
Desert hikes in Wadi Rum rarely stop for light wind or cloud, but guides may shorten routes if heat or sand conditions pose a safety risk. Your guide makes the final call on the day.
If official warnings affect travel in the reserve, the operator may contact you to discuss an alternative route or date.
Yes. Reception at the meeting area can store luggage while you walk. Use a private tent space to change into walking clothes if you arrive straight from travel.
Valuables should stay in a small day pack you carry or in a secure bag left at reception according to local instructions. Do not leave passports unattended in vehicles.
This five-hour hike focuses on walking and viewpoints rather than a cooked lunch stop on route. Bring snacks and sufficient water for the full outing unless your rate adds meals.
Nearby camp facilities at the meeting point may offer food after you return. Ask on arrival if you want to arrange lunch once the hike ends.
Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures for long desert walks. Winter days can be pleasant with cool mornings, while summer requires early starts and extra hydration.
Your guide adjusts pace and rest frequency based on seasonal heat. Sun protection is essential year round in the open desert.
