Glide across scenic Yorkshire waterways and experience a different perspective of the outdoors. Whether you’re paddling on the lake at Ripley Castle or heading downstream towards York, these sessions balance fun, skill-building, and plenty of time to enjoy your surroundings. Canoes and kayaks are both available, making this a flexible adventure for friends, families, and groups.
A 3-hour session at Ripley Castle Lake is the perfect introduction, giving you the chance to paddle in pairs or small groups while soaking up the scenery. Once everyone is comfortable, light-hearted challenges and games are introduced, bringing plenty of laughs and an opportunity to practise your technique. It’s a great choice for families and groups looking for a relaxed but active day out.
For something longer, the Ripon to Boroughbridge trip takes you on a 7-mile paddle lasting 5–6 hours. Along the way, you’ll enjoy the sights and sounds of the River Ure, stopping for a scenic lunch break before continuing downstream. There’s a good chance of spotting local wildlife, including herons, kingfishers, or even otters if you’re lucky.
If you’re after a real adventure, the two-day paddle from Boroughbridge to York adds an overnight element with riverside camping. Day one is all about covering the distance at an easy pace, with meals shared by the water’s edge, while day two brings you into the city of York for a celebratory finish. This option is perfect for small groups seeking both nature and a sense of achievement.
Sessions at Ripley Castle Lake offer a peaceful setting within the castle grounds, with calm waters that are perfect for beginners. The lake is surrounded by historic views, woodland trails, and open green spaces, making it a lovely spot to relax before or after your paddle.
Longer canoe and kayak trips explore the wider beauty of Yorkshire. The River Ure provides a scenic route through North Yorkshire, linking towns like Ripon, Boroughbridge, and York. With its mix of countryside views, wildlife encounters, and historic landmarks, it’s a fantastic way to experience the region from the water.
You don’t need prior experience to take part in any of the sessions. Instructors will introduce you to the basics, from handling the paddle to working as a team in the boat. Buoyancy aids and helmets are always provided for your safety.
All participants should be confident in water and able to manage being outdoors for the duration of the activity. A change of clothes and suitable footwear are recommended, as getting wet is very likely during games and group challenges.
The centre was founded in 2012 when two climbing friends turned a shared passion for the outdoors into a community-focused business. Their goal has always been to make adventure accessible, with activities that are fun, inclusive, and memorable.
With years of experience leading groups on both land and water, the team is committed to creating days out that combine skill-building with enjoyment. Whether you want a quick taster session or a multi-day challenge, you’ll be supported by friendly instructors who know the area inside out.
Yes, free parking is available at Ripley Castle for all visitors. When you arrive, it’s important to register your vehicle to ensure that parking is properly recorded. This can easily be done on the iPad located at reception, which helps the centre manage spaces efficiently and keeps everything organised for your visit.
The parking area is conveniently located close to the main facilities, making it straightforward to access your activity without a long walk. Even during busier periods, there is usually sufficient space for cars, so you shouldn’t need to worry about finding a spot. It is recommended to allow a few extra minutes when arriving to register your vehicle and make your way to the activity area.
Spectators are welcome at Ripley Castle and can enjoy watching the activities while relaxing with a coffee or finding a comfortable spot nearby. This makes it easy for friends and family to be part of the experience without needing to participate directly. It’s a great way to keep everyone included, whether you are taking on a challenging adventure or a more leisurely activity.
However, please note that some areas, such as the lake, are a considerable distance from Basecamp and are not accessible for wheelchairs or pushchairs. It’s important for spectators to plan accordingly if they wish to follow along closely. While everyone is welcome, the terrain and activity locations may limit how much of the action can be observed from certain spots.
Basic changing facilities are provided for visitors who need privacy before or after their activity. These spaces are simple but functional, allowing you to change comfortably without disturbing other guests. They are designed to meet essential needs rather than offer extensive amenities.
For convenience, it is generally recommended to arrive dressed and ready for your activity. This reduces the need to rely on the changing areas and allows you to start your adventure promptly. Preparing in advance also helps minimise delays and ensures you can make the most of your time at the centre.
Dogs are welcome at Ripley Castle, as we encourage adventurers to share their experiences with their furry friends. Having your dog along can make your outdoor visit more enjoyable and adds an extra layer of companionship to your day. For safety and comfort, dogs must be kept on a lead at all times, and owners should ensure their pets are well-behaved and friendly towards other visitors and animals.
Please be aware that some areas, including the lake, Disc Golf, Cryptic Chase, and Archery, do not allow dogs. These restrictions are in place to maintain safety for both your pet and other participants. Planning ahead will help you make the most of your visit while ensuring your dog remains safe, happy, and part of the experience wherever permitted.
While the boats are stable, there’s always a chance of splashes or a capsize, especially during games and group activities. It’s part of the fun and adds to the experience. Some people may only get their hands wet, while others might end up soaked, so it’s best to be prepared.
We strongly recommend bringing a full change of clothes and a spare pair of shoes. Lightweight, quick-dry fabrics are most comfortable on the water, and a towel will come in handy at the end of the session. Having dry clothes to change into ensures you leave feeling warm and comfortable after your paddle.
The centre has a limited supply of wetsuits and cags available for those who want them. These are useful if the weather is cooler or you simply prefer having an extra layer for comfort. Every participant will be fitted with a buoyancy aid, which is essential for safety on the water.
If you already own your own wetsuit, you are welcome to bring it along and use it instead. For most sessions, comfortable outdoor clothing is perfectly fine, especially during the warmer months. The key is to dress for the weather while remembering that you might get wet at some stage.
Yes, safety is always prioritised, and buoyancy aids and helmets are provided for every session. Instructors will ensure the equipment is fitted properly and explain how it works before you get on the water. This way, even beginners feel confident and secure during the activity.
In addition to safety gear, all canoes and kayaks are maintained to a high standard. The guides are also trained in water safety and first aid, so you can focus on enjoying the experience knowing that everything has been carefully planned.
Sessions are weather-dependent for your safety. If conditions are unsuitable—for example, very strong winds or thunderstorms—the activity will be rescheduled. Your guides will always check forecasts ahead of time and make the call with your enjoyment and wellbeing in mind.
In most cases, light rain does not stop a session. Paddling in drizzle can be enjoyable and adds to the adventure, especially with the right clothing. A waterproof jacket or cag is often all you need to stay comfortable.
Absolutely. These sessions are designed to welcome all levels, including complete beginners. You’ll be introduced to paddling techniques, steering, and teamwork in a safe, friendly environment. The calm waters at Ripley Castle are especially good for starting out.
For those who want more of a challenge, the river trips gradually increase in distance and variety. This progression means beginners can build confidence on the lake before moving on to longer adventures like Ripon to Boroughbridge or Boroughbridge to York.
Comfortable, flexible clothing is best. Quick-dry fabrics or sportswear are ideal, as jeans and heavy clothing can feel restrictive when wet. Footwear should be secure, such as trainers or water shoes, rather than flip-flops or sandals.
Since getting wet is likely, it’s wise to bring a spare outfit for afterwards. In cooler months, layering with a fleece and waterproof top helps keep you warm. Don’t forget essentials like a towel and sun protection in summer.
Absolutely amazing from start to finish. We laughed the whole way through, learning lots about the sport and the history of the castle. Couldn’t recommend enough!
We were hopeless but it was good fun!
