This visit is an ATV ride and nothing else competing with it: jungle tracks around Puerto Morelos, helmet on, guide in front. You get a proper briefing before any engine starts. We pick you up from your hotel and bring you back when the machines are parked.
After pickup you are at the park with the ATV you will actually ride, which is when the brakes, the spacing and the plan for the line all make sense. Helmets go on before anyone sets off, and if you have not driven one before, this is the moment to say so.
The trail is dirt, roots and the occasional puddle, ridden in a line behind the leader, which is more fun than it sounds and less chaotic than people fear. When the loop is done you hand the machines back and the transfer takes you to your hotel.
Puerto Morelos is a low-rise fishing town on the reef, and the park sits in the jungle just inland, off the coast road. You ride the park tracks, not the town streets and not the beach, with the canopy opening and closing overhead.
The guide stops where the whole line can hear the next instruction, which keeps the ride sociable. You stay with that leader from the briefing until the machines are back in the yard.
You will need to be at least 16 years old. The ride is outside in warm, humid weather, so sun cream and water from the moment you leave the van will make the afternoon much better.
On the trail you follow the guide's spacing and speed, and you wear the helmet they fit. Trying the brakes in the yard first is part of the fun of getting it right, not a test you can fail.
The control talk happens with your own ATV, so you can feel the brakes before the trail gets interesting. Staff set the order and the gaps, and they do not send people off to invent a route through the jungle.
The afternoon is one machine, one briefing and one trail, which is a relief if you just want to ride. If a section is too soft after rain, the guide shortens it and tells you before you reach that point.
Hotel lobby pickup applies on routes that include transport; be ready at the stated departure time with photo ID for children if parks require it.
Self drivers receive meeting point coordinates and parking notes from the operator ahead of the activity date.
You should come ready for an ATV ride on jungle tracks. Most of the time is outside, so the heat is as much a part of the day as the activity itself.
Take water when you need it, and tell the guide at the start if you want a slower place in the group. That is much easier than trying to catch them once everyone is already moving.
A meal is not part of this visit, so eat beforehand and bring water with you. A snack in your bag is useful if you get hungry between stops.
Bring more water than you expect to drink if you are out over the middle of the day. A hat makes the sunny stretches much easier.
Light rain does not usually stop the visit, but lightning or a track that is too soft can change the route. The guide decides that on the day and tells you before you set off.
If a section is shortened, they explain the new plan at the briefing, before you are on the trail. You will hear it with the group, not halfway along.
Anyone taking part needs to be at least 16 years old, and children need an adult with them. The guide will say before a section starts if it is not suitable for someone in your group.
They need to be able to listen to the safety talk and stay with the group. The same briefing applies to adults and to children.
You do not need to have done this before. The guide explains how it works, and what they need from you, before the group sets off.
If it is your first time, say so during that briefing. It is easier to ask while everyone is still together than once you are underway.
You can bring a phone or a camera if it is secure and you can spare a hand. Ask the crew before you attach anything to a helmet, a harness or a handlebar.
If someone is taking photos for the group that day, the crew will say so when you arrive. They will also tell you where to collect them afterwards.
If a ruin, a reserve or a beach asks for a local payment, the guide explains it before you get to the entrance. It helps to have a little cash with you in case that happens.
Tips for the crew are your own choice at the end of the day. The guide is the person to ask if you are not sure what a site is asking for.
Bring a dry bag for a phone and anything else you want to keep dry. Ask the crew when you arrive if there is somewhere to change and leave a bag.
Put your name on anything you set down. The group moves between stops, and bags are easy to mix up.
A phone in a waterproof pouch is the simplest option on a boat or in the water. Ask the crew before you strap a camera to a helmet or a machine.
Drones and flash are often not allowed near wildlife or at the ruins. Follow what the guide and the site ask on the day.
Wear light clothes you can move in, closed shoes, and a hat. This includes an ATV, so sun cream and a bottle of water are worth having from the start.
Bring swimwear underneath if the visit includes a swim, and a dry layer for the van or the boat. Secure anything you do not want to lose.
