Spend a full day on the ice edge outside Tromso, boarding a small ice-going boat, pushing through frozen fjord water, and then sliding into a drysuit to float among the floes. It is a longer and more immersive take on Arctic cold-water adventure, built around comfort, safety and a warm basecamp stop ashore before you sail back to the city.
The day starts at Tromso Havn, where you meet the crew, receive a short welcome briefing and set course for the quieter reaches of Malangen beyond the busy harbour routes. Watching the boat work through pack ice is part of the experience long before you step into the water.
At the ice edge you will step into arctic rescue drysuits over your normal clothes, and your guide stays with the group as you float between the floes. You remain dry and warm inside the suit even when the air temperature and the ice around you tell a different story.
Afterwards everyone gathers at a fjord-side basecamp for coffee, tea and freshly baked Norwegian waffles, and you receive a signed Arctic certificate to take home before the boat turns back towards Tromso and the lights of the harbour come into view again.
Malangen lies beyond the usual harbour circuits around Tromso, where ice builds more reliably through the winter and the fjord feels quieter once you leave the last houses behind. Departures are from Kaigata 4 in Tromso, and mountains and open sea stay in view for most of the day.
It is still an easy reach from the city centre by foot, bus or taxi, but the landscape quickly feels remote once you pass the harbour wall and the boat settles into its course north and west.
The minimum age for this expedition is 12 years, and drysuits are designed to fit guests from 150 cm to 200 cm tall with a proper seal around the body. Swimming and prior experience are not required, though you should feel steady on a boat deck and comfortable spending several hours outdoors in cold Arctic conditions.
Wear warm layers under the suit, bring sturdy boots for deck time, and message us beforehand if you are unsure about sizing, mobility or whether the drysuit will work for your build. We are happy to answer those questions before you commit to the date.
We cap departures at twelve guests so the boat never feels crowded and the crew can give everyone proper attention on deck, during the suit fitting and while you are in the water among the ice. That small-group feel is central to how the day is run, not an afterthought.
From the ice navigation and drysuit session to the waffle stop and the signed certificate at the end, the expedition is designed to feel like a complete Arctic story rather than a quick photo stop you tick off and forget. You leave with more than a snapshot and a memory of the cold.
Check in at Tromso harbour at Prostneset on Kaigata 4 and meet your guide and crew before boarding the ice-going vessel. You will receive a welcome briefing that sets out the plan for the day and then step on board for departure into Malangen fjord with the rest of your small group.
Cruise through frozen fjord waters on a small icebreaker-style vessel while the hull works through pack ice beneath you. You will leave Tromso behind and move into the quieter, more open scenery of the Malangen fjords, with mountains and frozen coastline unfolding on either side of the boat.
At the ice edge your guide fits you in high-grade arctic rescue drysuits and walks through the safety procedures step by step before anyone enters the water. The suits keep you completely dry over your clothes, and you will have time to ask questions and adjust your layers while still on board or at the landing point.
Enter the water in small groups and float safely among the ice under close supervision from your guide and crew. No swimming skills are needed because the drysuit keeps you warm and buoyant, and you can take your time absorbing the Arctic silence and the sheer scale of the frozen fjord around you.
Warm up at a cosy fjord-side basecamp with freshly baked Norwegian waffles, hot coffee and tea while the group comes back together on dry land. You will receive your personalised signed Arctic certificate and have a chance to share stories from the day before the boat prepares for the return leg.
Return by boat to Tromso harbour after the expedition, with the sail back giving you time to change, warm up and let the day settle in. You will have a chance to reflect on the ice cruise and the float before heading back to your accommodation in the city for the evening.
We start at Tromso Havn at Prostneset on Kaigata 4, where you will meet the crew and board the ice-going vessel for the day. Your confirmation will have the pier details and boarding time so you know exactly where to be and when to arrive.
Hotel collection may be available on some departures, and it helps if you tell us where you are staying when you book. We will then confirm whether pickup applies to your date and what time to expect the vehicle.
Most harbour tours keep you on the boat from start to finish, but this day also takes you into a drysuit and out among real ice floes after the vessel has broken through the frozen fjord. You get to feel the ice navigation and the cold-water floating in one continuous Arctic story.
That combination of cruising through pack ice, floating between the floes, and warming up afterwards at a fjord-side basecamp is what sets the expedition apart from a standard sightseeing trip around the harbour.
Guests need to be at least 12 years old and fit the drysuit sizing, which generally means a height between 150 cm and 200 cm for a safe and comfortable seal. We ask for your height when you book so we can check the suit will work before you travel.
If you are outside those measurements or unsure whether the suit will work for you, message us before booking and we will be straight with you about fit. We would rather sort that out in advance than have a difficult conversation on the morning of departure.
Dress for a cold day on the water with thermals and a warm sweater under the drysuit, and bring a proper coat for your time on deck before and after the float. The suit goes over your normal clothes, so what you wear underneath matters more than you might expect.
Sturdy, grippy boots are important on the boat and around the ice edge, so leave smooth-soled trainers at home and choose footwear that will keep your feet warm on metal decks and icy surfaces.
The icebreaker-style boat trip, your arctic rescue drysuit, safety equipment, guided floating session, full safety briefing, basecamp waffles with hot drinks and your signed Arctic certificate are all included in the price.
Whether pickup from your accommodation in Tromso is part of the package depends on the booking option you chose, and your confirmation will spell that out clearly so you know what to arrange yourself.
We never take more than twelve guests on a departure, which keeps the deck manageable and means the crew can help everyone with their drysuit without rushing. You will have enough time at the ice edge to float, warm up and enjoy the basecamp stop without feeling hurried through each stage.
Some dates need at least two people booked before the expedition can run. If you are travelling alone, message us first and we will tell you whether your chosen departure already has enough guests or still needs a partner booking.
Allow around six hours from boarding at Tromso harbour to your return, including the ice cruise out to Malangen, your floating session, the waffle stop at basecamp and the sail back into town. It is a full day rather than a quick harbour loop, and the pace is built around that.
Ice conditions can shorten or lengthen the time you spend on the water, but the crew keeps the day moving smoothly without rushing anyone through the suit fitting or the float itself.
Ice, wind and temperature are watched constantly throughout the voyage, and the captain may change route or delay entering the water if conditions are not safe for the group. Your safety on deck and in the drysuit always comes before sticking to a fixed timetable.
When floating is not possible on the day, the team will offer the best alternative they can and talk you through what still makes sense in the conditions. We would rather adjust the plan than push ahead regardless.
You do not need to swim for this expedition because the drysuit seals over your clothes and keeps you buoyant on the surface while guides stay in the water with you. Most guests are surprised by how warm and supported they feel once the suit is fitted properly.
We cover how to use the suit, how to relax while floating, and how to signal if you want to get out during the briefing at the ice edge. You can take your time and only enter the water when you feel ready.
Reaching Kaigata 4 under your own steam is straightforward unless pickup was included when you booked your place on the expedition. Harbour buses and taxis are easy to find, and the pier is well signposted from central Tromso.
When pickup from your hotel is part of your booking, return transport to Tromso after the expedition is covered as well. Your confirmation will make clear which legs of the journey are included on your date.
