You get two rides and a whole lot of mangrove. You spend about an hour and a half on an ATV through the tracks north of Cancún, then switch to an airboat that sits low in the channels toward Isla Blanca. We pick you up in the Costa Mujeres area and bring you back when both are done.
The visit starts with a look at the ATV before anyone turns a key. Your guide covers the brakes, the gaps, and what to do when the mangrove track goes soft, then you ride in line for about an hour and a half with the trees close on either side.
After that the pace changes in the best way. You step onto a flat airboat for a run through Laguna de Chacmuchuch toward Isla Blanca, sitting low enough that the mangroves feel close, with a snack stop so you can swap the helmet for a seat and enjoy the boat.
Costa Mujeres is the stretch north of Cancún's hotel zone, on the road out toward Isla Blanca, with the lagoon just inland of the beach. The ATVs use the jungle and the edge of the mangrove. The airboat has the shallow channels, well away from the open sea.
How far the boat goes depends on the water and the wind, and your guide decides that at the dock, which is part of the charm. You stay with the group between the park and the boat, and the snack is a proper pause to change kit.
Most of this one is in the sun, on a track and then on the water, so sun cream, a hat and a bottle of water will earn their keep. Have them with you from the van, because the shade comes and goes.
On the ATV you follow the guide's speed and spacing and wear the helmet they fit, after a chat about the brakes. On the airboat you wear a life jacket and sit where the crew points, and that conversation happens before the boat leaves the dock.
You get two briefings, and you will be glad of both. The ATV talk happens with the machine in front of you, so the soft ground makes sense before the engines start. The airboat talk is a fresh start: where to sit, what the life jacket is for, and how low you will be in the channels.
The crew is out in these mangroves all week, so they know which tracks are firm and which channels are open. If the weather means one ride should be shorter, they say so before you set off, and we still get you back to your hotel.
Hotel lobby pickup applies on routes that include transport; be ready at the stated departure time with photo ID for children if parks require it.
Self drivers receive meeting point coordinates and parking notes from the operator ahead of the activity date.
There is a snack stop between the ATV and the airboat. It is a pause to change kit, not a full meal, so eat beforehand if you want something more substantial.
Bring a bottle of water with you for both rides. If you have a dietary need, tell the guide when you arrive.
Light rain does not usually stop the visit. Lightning, a rough sea or a track that is too soft can shorten or move a section, and the guide explains that before you continue.
You will hear the change before you kit up for the next part. The group stays together while that decision is made.
Children can join when they can follow the briefing with an adult beside them. The guide will say before a section starts if it is not suitable for someone in your group.
They need to be able to listen to the safety talk and stay with the group. The same briefing applies to adults and to children.
You do not need to swim on this visit, because you stay on the boat or the machine. A life jacket is fitted before you leave the dock.
If you are uneasy on the water, tell the crew before you board. They will show you where to sit, or where to ride, before the group leaves.
You can bring a phone or a camera if it is secure and you can spare a hand. Ask the crew before you attach anything to a helmet, a harness or a handlebar.
If someone is taking photos for the group that day, the crew will say so when you arrive. They will also tell you where to collect them afterwards.
If a ruin, a reserve or a beach asks for a local payment, the guide explains it before you get to the entrance. It helps to have a little cash with you in case that happens.
Tips for the crew are your own choice at the end of the day. The guide is the person to ask if you are not sure what a site is asking for.
Bring a dry bag for a phone and anything else you want to keep dry. Ask the crew when you arrive if there is somewhere to change and leave a bag.
Put your name on anything you set down. The group moves between stops, and bags are easy to mix up.
A phone in a waterproof pouch is the simplest option on a boat or in the water. Ask the crew before you strap a camera to a helmet or a machine.
Drones and flash are often not allowed near wildlife or at the ruins. Follow what the guide and the site ask on the day.
Wear light clothes you can move in, closed shoes, and a hat. This includes an ATV and a boat, so sun cream and a bottle of water are worth having from the start.
Bring swimwear underneath if the visit includes a swim, and a dry layer for the van or the boat. Secure anything you do not want to lose.
You should come ready for an ATV ride and a seated airboat trip. Most of the time is outside, so the heat is as much a part of the day as the activity itself.
Take water when you need it, and tell the guide at the start if you want a slower place in the group. That is much easier than trying to catch them once everyone is already moving.
