Spending a week climbing in El Chorro is one of the best ways to build confidence and progress into the world of multi-pitch sport climbing. Designed for climbers looking to move beyond single pitch cragging, this course combines technical instruction, guided climbing and problem-solving in one of Europe’s most well-known climbing destinations.
The course begins in El Chorro with a review of basic climbing movement, rope work and single pitch systems to make sure everyone is comfortable before moving into longer routes. Early sessions focus on refining lead climbing skills, improving communication and understanding how multi-pitch systems operate in a real climbing environment. With over 800 bolted routes in the area, there is a huge amount of variety available, from easy angled slabs to steeper limestone walls and technical sections higher above the valley floor.
As the week progresses, participants begin taking a more active role in the climbs. Daniel and the guiding team gradually introduce more responsibility, allowing climbers to build confidence in route management, belay transitions and decision making while remaining in a supportive setting. Days on the rock are combined with instruction in improvised rescue techniques, problem solving and how to safely manage unexpected situations while climbing.
Later in the course, climbers lead and manage multi-pitch routes suited to their own ability level, putting all of the skills learned throughout the week into practice. The final day includes a full review of systems, debrief sessions and transport back from El Chorro. By the end of the course, participants leave with a strong foundation in multi-pitch sport climbing and the confidence to continue climbing in larger mountain environments around the world.
Set within the Andalucian countryside around 50km from Málaga Airport, El Chorro has become one of the most recognised sport climbing areas in Europe. Massive limestone walls surround the valley, creating a huge climbing playground with reliable winter conditions, good access and routes suited to a wide range of abilities. The famous Caminito del Rey walkway cuts through nearby gorges and gives the area a dramatic mountain atmosphere without needing long approaches to the climbing sectors.
Away from the cliffs, the surrounding villages offer a relaxed climbing culture with cafés, small restaurants and accommodation spread throughout the valley. Cooler winter temperatures make climbing conditions ideal during the season, while the mix of history, local food and mountain scenery gives the trip a balance of technical progression and time spent enjoying southern Spain outside of the climbing days.
This course is aimed at climbers who already have some experience climbing at indoor walls or single pitch crags and would like to move into multi-pitch sport climbing. Previous rope management experience is useful but not essential, as the course is designed to build skills progressively throughout the week.
A reasonable level of fitness is recommended as several days involve long climbing routes and full days outside. Participants should be comfortable spending extended periods on rock and willing to learn technical systems in a practical environment.
Years of guiding and instructional experience shape every aspect of this course, creating an environment where learning feels approachable, supportive and structured. Daniel has guided and taught climbing across Iceland, Patagonia, Nepal and beyond, bringing together international experience with a strong focus on safe decision making and technical understanding rather than simply completing routes.
Small group sizes allow instructors to spend more time with each climber, helping participants progress at their own pace while building confidence on the rock. The guiding approach focuses on understanding systems properly, encouraging independent thinking and making sure climbers leave with practical skills they can continue using long after the course has finished.
Previous climbing experience is recommended, but you do not need to already be a multi-pitch climber to join the course. Many participants arrive with experience from indoor walls or single pitch sport climbing and use this week to safely progress into longer routes and more technical climbing systems.
Instruction is delivered progressively throughout the week, allowing climbers to build confidence step by step. The course focuses heavily on learning, so there is plenty of time for practising rope systems, movement skills and climbing techniques before taking on more complex routes.
El Chorro offers an enormous variety of limestone climbing, including slabs, vertical walls, cracks and steeper tufa sections. Routes are chosen based on weather, group ability and the learning goals for each day.
Throughout the week, the climbing gradually becomes more involved as skills improve. Early sessions focus on shorter climbs and technical practice, while later days include larger multi-pitch routes where participants begin taking more responsibility for route management and climbing systems.
Participants should expect full days outdoors carrying climbing equipment and spending long periods on rock. Some routes involve several pitches and extended time exposed on cliffs, so a reasonable level of fitness is important.
The pace is adjusted to the group and there is no expectation to climb at a high grade. The main focus is learning efficient movement, safe systems and building confidence rather than pushing physical limits.
Improvised rescue techniques form a major part of the training throughout the week. These sessions are designed to help climbers understand how to safely deal with common climbing problems and unexpected situations while on multi-pitch terrain.
You will learn practical systems such as counterbalance rappels, escaping belays and lowering techniques. The goal is to leave with a stronger understanding of how to manage yourself and others safely in climbing environments.
Accommodation is arranged locally within the El Chorro area, close to the climbing sectors used throughout the week. Staying nearby allows the group to maximise climbing time while remaining close to cafés, restaurants and local facilities.
Evenings are often spent reviewing the day, discussing climbing systems and relaxing with the group after time on the rock. The atmosphere is friendly and social, helping climbers feel comfortable asking questions and learning together.
A detailed kit list can be provided before the course begins. Personal climbing equipment, clothing suitable for cooler mornings and evenings, and general travel items will all be required.
If you are missing certain technical items, guidance can usually be provided beforehand regarding what can be rented or sourced locally. Bringing equipment you are already familiar with is always encouraged where possible.
Reliable winter weather and huge amounts of accessible climbing make El Chorro one of Europe’s best training locations for sport climbers. The area allows instructors to select routes that match the learning goals of each day without needing long approaches or difficult logistics.
Because there are climbs suited to many different ability levels close together, the course can adapt well to mixed groups. This creates a more relaxed learning environment where climbers can focus on developing skills steadily across the week.
