Sailing the Cumbrian coast offers a great chance to learn the ropes while soaking up some coastal views from a different perspective. Over three days, you'll sail from Whitehaven to Maryport and back, helping crew the boat while building confidence at sea. The trip includes opportunities for gentle day sails, potential night sailing, and a good amount of hands-on experience.
Your experience starts at Whitehaven Marina, where you'll settle in onboard and be allocated your bunk. The first morning is dedicated to a safety briefing and a familiarisation tour of the yacht. Once everyone is comfortable, the crew will cast off and begin the relaxed sail north along the Cumbrian coast. Expect to get involved in sail handling, steering, and learning how to work as part of a team. The pace is easy-going, with time to take in the scenery and get used to life at sea. Night sailing may be introduced depending on conditions, giving a chance to sail under the stars and understand navigation in reduced visibility.
The second day typically includes some time ashore in or near Maryport, where you'll have the opportunity to explore or unwind before the return sail. On the final day, the boat makes its way back to Whitehaven. Throughout the trip, you’ll rotate through watch duties, helming, and helping with onboard tasks, including galley work. By the end of the experience, you’ll feel more familiar with how a yacht runs and what it's like to be part of a working crew.
Whitehaven Marina is based on the edge of the Lake District, offering easy access to the Irish Sea and a scenic stretch of the Cumbrian coastline. The marina is modern and well-serviced, with good links to the town centre for travel or supplies before departure.
The sailing route to Maryport follows a quieter section of coast, giving a fresh perspective on Cumbria’s maritime character. Maryport itself is a historic harbour town with a working port and maritime heritage. Depending on weather and group preferences, the night may be spent moored in the marina or anchored in a sheltered bay nearby.
No previous sailing experience is required, but participants should be reasonably fit and comfortable moving around an active sailing boat.
The centre focuses on making sailing accessible, relaxed, and enjoyable for people of all experience levels. Every trip is run with a supportive, informal approach, giving you the confidence to try new things while still feeling safe and looked after. Instruction is hands-on, and everyone gets involved at a level they’re comfortable with.
Whether you’re looking to try sailing for the first time, spend time outdoors, or simply experience the rhythm of life on the water, this trip offers the chance to disconnect and do something different. The slower pace of coastal sailing makes it ideal for getting used to the basics, while the friendly team helps make the whole experience enjoyable from start to finish.
