Watch sunset over Lan Ha Bay, swim from the boat and sleep on a floating homestay before a guided night kayak to see bioluminescent plankton. Day two is a full cruise through caves, quiet beaches and a local fish farm in Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay.
Day one focuses on the late afternoon and evening: meet in Cat Ba, cruise into Lan Ha Bay for sunset and a swim, check in to the floating homestay, dine on the water and paddle kayaks after dark to look for plankton glow when conditions allow. You sleep on the bay overnight.
Day two starts with sunrise and breakfast, then a full cruise with cave kayaking, lagoon swimming, lunch on board, beach snorkelling and a fish farm visit before returning to Cat Ba in the late afternoon.
Lan Ha Bay sits between Cat Ba Island and the mainland, with hundreds of limestone islets and floating communities that fish year-round in sheltered channels. The floating homestay anchors in this seascape, part of the wider Cat Ba Archipelago UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Day two extends into Ha Long Bay to the north-east, visiting caves and beaches that see fewer large tour boats than the central harbour routes. Cat Ba town on Nui Ngoc street is the meeting point for both days, with pier transfers included once the cruise begins.
No kayaking or swimming experience is required. Life jackets are provided for all water activities, and the night paddle is led by a guide in calm bay waters.
Bioluminescent plankton vary with moon phase, season and water clarity, so the glow may be faint on some evenings. Families with younger children are welcome when accompanied by adults.
Combining a night on the water with a plankton kayak sets this apart from standard day cruises, giving two perspectives on Lan Ha Bay in one booking. The floating homestay avoids a late ferry back to town after the evening paddle.
Day two still covers the classic cave and beach circuit into Ha Long Bay, so you do not miss the main highlights while gaining the after-dark experience on night one.
Meet at the office on Nui Ngoc street or at your Cat Ba hotel for transfer to the boat around 16:00. Cruise into Lan Ha Bay as the light softens, with time on deck to photograph the karst islands before a swim straight from the vessel in open water.
Check in to your room on the floating homestay, enjoy dinner on the homestay or main boat, then follow the guide in kayaks after dark. Moving your paddle through the water may reveal bioluminescent plankton when conditions are favourable, before you sleep on the bay.
Wake for dawn on the bay and breakfast on board, then set out on the day cruise through Lan Ha Bay with views of sandy beaches along the route. The boat stops for kayaking through Bat Cave, Dark Cave and Bright Cave into sheltered lagoons.
The route continues into the southern part of Ha Long Bay where fewer tourist boats operate, with a swim in a calm lagoon before a set-menu lunch served on deck.
After lunch the cruise crosses eastern Lan Ha Bay with time on the sundeck past islets such as Pen, Sailing, Frog and Turtle. The boat pauses at a deserted beach for swimming and snorkelling, then visits a local fish farm to see floating aquaculture.
A sunset party with drinks and snacks on the return leg brings the trip to a close as you reach Cat Ba town between 16:00 and 17:00.
