you’re new to the outdoors or already have some experience, the day is shaped to meet your personal objectives. With one-to-one attention, you’ll have the flexibility to learn at your own pace without the restrictions of a fixed timetable.
Before the day, you’ll have a chat with your instructor to identify your current level of knowledge and what you would most like to learn. This preparation ensures the session is fully tailored to you, whether that means covering the basics of bushcraft or tackling more advanced techniques.
On the day itself, the focus remains entirely on your chosen skills. This might involve learning to light fires in different ways, practising carving techniques, improving your confidence with an axe, or identifying useful trees and plants in the woodland. If your interest lies in foraging or woodland cooking, you’ll spend time collecting ingredients and preparing food over the fire. You could also choose to explore tracking, wildlife identification, or traditional skills such as natural cordage and herbal remedies.
The day is flexible, so if you wish to switch focus partway through, that can easily be accommodated. If there are areas where further expertise is needed, the instructor will be honest and recommend other resources to help you continue your bushcraft development.
Training takes place in a private 35-acre ancient broadleaf woodland in Westwell, Kent. This woodland lies within the Kent Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and offers the perfect setting for hands-on learning. The area is rich in wildlife, with species including owls, woodpeckers, buzzards, and fallow deer.
The site is easily accessible from London and the wider South East by both rail and road, making it convenient to reach while still offering the feeling of being surrounded by nature. Participants leave their vehicles at a designated meeting point before walking into the woods for around 10 minutes.
No previous experience is necessary to take part. The training is suitable for beginners through to those who already have knowledge and wish to refine their skills.
Participants should bring a packed lunch, suitable outdoor clothing, and a willingness to get hands-on. All specialist equipment and tools required for the activities will be provided.
The centre was founded in 2011 and has built a strong reputation for teaching traditional skills in a friendly and supportive way. The instructors are passionate about the outdoors and about sharing their knowledge to help people connect more deeply with the natural environment.
With a focus on practical learning, every session is hands-on and designed to give you repeatable skills you can use again and again. The woodland setting, small group sizes, and highly personalised approach ensure that every participant leaves with new knowledge and confidence.
