Powerboat Level 1 is where most people first touch a throttle and discover that boats do not steer like cars. The RYA Start Powerboating course keeps you under close instructor supervision while you learn slow-speed handling, basic safety checks and how to come alongside without drama.
You are not qualifying to drive a RIB alone after one day. You are building the habits that make Powerboat Level 2 feel less intimidating: kill cord on, look before you turn, and communicate with whoever is on the pontoon.
Most centres run Level 1 as a single day afloat, often in sheltered water with short briefings ashore. Children from age eight can take part, though under-sixteens receive an endorsed certificate. Wear the kill cord. Instructors mention it until it becomes reflex.
Level 1 is continuously assessed by your RYA instructor on the water. There is no written exam.
Extra time on one manoeuvre is normal. The goal is safe habits, not racing the syllabus.

Warm, waterproof layers, non-slip shoes and sun protection. Centres usually provide buoyancy aids and often wet weather gear.

Your certificate is endorsed for inland or coastal waters depending on where you train. Coastal courses include tidal awareness and sea-specific procedures.

Progress to Powerboat Level 2 for independent driving and ICC eligibility. Some sailors use Level 1 as supervised safety-boat experience before committing to the full Safety Boat course later.
