Paddle Explore Award is where you stop waiting for someone to tell you which way to paddle and start planning simple journeys yourself. The coach is still there, but the emphasis shifts toward independence: choosing venues, reading wind and weather, and staying safe while you explore.
Ideally you arrive with Paddle Start or Paddle Discover behind you, though there is no strict prerequisite. Explore works in any craft: kayak, canoe, SUP, bell boat or raft. Sessions typically run across one to two days or a series of modular blocks.
By the end you should be an independent paddler able to plan and undertake self-guided adventures safely on sheltered water. That does not mean paddling alone on a busy shipping lane. It means you understand what you can handle, what kit to take, and when to change the plan because the wind picked up. Sheltered-water confidence does not always transfer to rivers or open coast. That is why discipline-specific awards exist next.
Explore uses continuous assessment by your coach during sessions and journey exercises. There is no written exam.

Explore sits after Discover in the entry pathway and before discipline-specific Personal Performance Awards.

Leave a comment when you book with your paddling history if you learned abroad or have gaps in rescue skills.

No written exam. Your coach assesses craft control, safety awareness and independent decision making on the water.
You are signed off when you meet Explore outcomes consistently, including on a self-planned sheltered-water journey.
Discover builds fundamental skills and coached decision making. Explore gives you more ownership of planning and paddling journeys with the coach reviewing your choices.
Think of Discover as learning the strokes and Explore as learning when and where to use them.
Any craft: kayak, canoe, SUP, bell boat or raft. Pick a centre that offers the discipline you plan to pursue afterward.
Craft choice affects which Personal Performance Award pathway you follow next.
Clothes for a full day on the water, non-slip footwear, food, water and warm layers. Centres usually provide craft, paddle and buoyancy aid.
Bring a notebook if you like writing down planning tips. A dry bag for spare layers is useful on journey days.
Move into discipline-specific Personal Performance Awards: Canoe Award, White Water Award, SUP Sheltered Water Award or sea kayak modules.
You can also paddle independently on sheltered water within your own limits and join club trips with stronger foundations.
Explore prepares you for self-guided adventures within sheltered environments and your own competence. It is not a licence to paddle anywhere alone.
Clubs, hire centres and insurers set their own rules. Always check local conditions and tell someone your plan.
Journey exercises start small. Your coach reviews every plan before you launch and stays within reach on the water.
