British Cycling Off-Road Leader Award is the entry point for leading mellow off-road rides. On adventuro it still appears under the older name Fundamentals of MTB Leadership. Same award, updated branding. You learn to guide small groups on pre-ridden gravel tracks, bridleways and blue trail-centre loops without pretending you are a downhill race coach.
The course is two days of classroom and on-bike work with assessment woven through both days, plus a couple of hours of online modules before you arrive. Leadership here means pacing the slowest rider, fixing a dropped chain without theatrics, and noticing when someone is cold, thirsty or quietly lost. Flash descending skills matter less than calm communication.
You need to ride blue trails comfortably, hold British Cycling membership, and show recent riding in a logbook. Two-day outdoor first aid is required for the accredited award. If you only ever ride road loops, look at the Ride Leadership pathway instead. Wrong tool, wrong award.
Two consecutive days, typically 09:00 to 17:00, plus two to three hours of pre-course online learning.
Some providers run weekend blocks; others split across weekdays. Bring lunch and spare layers regardless.
Off-Road Leader Award uses combined training and assessment across the two days rather than a separate exam weekend months later.

Find activitiesIt is British Cycling's entry-level off-road leadership qualification, now branded Off-Road Leader Award. You learn to guide small groups on non-technical pre-ridden routes such as gravel, bridleways and blue trail-centre trails.
It is not a coaching award for teaching jumps and drops. It is trip leadership for accessible off-road days.
You should be comfortable on blue-grade trails and ride regularly. British Cycling suggests a logbook showing ten one-hour rides and five longer rides of at least 2.5 hours in the last six months.
Inclusive alternatives exist for adaptive riders. Leave a comment when you book if you need a non-standard logbook format.
Two full days on the bike plus two to three hours of online learning beforehand. Assessment is integrated into those two days.
Arrive with modules complete. Providers are unsympathetic when everyone sits in a café doing homework instead of riding.
No standalone written paper. You demonstrate planning, leadership and repairs practically while tutors assess throughout the course.
Online modules include knowledge checks. The real test is keeping eight riders safe and vaguely cheerful on a windy bridleway.
No. This award covers non-technical terrain up to blue grade on pre-ridden routes. Technical red and black trail leadership sits with Trail Leader and higher awards.
Leading within your remit is how you keep insurance valid and riders coming back.
Yes for the fully accredited award. British Cycling requires a two-day outdoor first aid certificate appropriate to the country you lead in.
Some candidates complete first aid the week before the course. Check expiry dates before you register.
Mountain bikes, e-MTBs, gravel bikes and adaptive off-road bikes are all in scope. You must ride the type you plan to lead on competently.
Turning up on a rusty hybrid for a gravel leadership assessment sends a message you probably do not intend.
Lead club rides, school groups and centre days on qualifying terrain. Common next steps include Trail Leader for technical singletrack or road Ride Leadership Level 2 if your passion is tarmac.
Employers and insurers still set their own deployment rules. The award proves competence; local policies set ratios.
Sixteen in Scotland or seventeen in England and Wales to attend. Independent leading is only from eighteen even if you pass younger.
Plan accordingly if you are booking for a college or youth programme.
Your usual riding kit, spare tubes or plug kit, multi-tool, waterproofs, food and a working bike. Bring logbook evidence if the provider asked for it.
Leadership courses involve standing around in briefings. Warm layers beat fashionable race kit.
